Dinosaur Track

My son, who works in a coal mine, has seen dinosaur tracks on the ceiling before, but has had no way to recover them.

This time he found one that had fallen intact to the ground and brought it home. Its very fragile, as coal begins to deteriorate once it is out of its comfort zone.

It measures a full 15" from the tip of Toe 1 to Toe 3. There may be a 4th toe, but its hard to tell. He knew what it was because my Dad had one (its mine now). Plus we live in dinosaur country -- there are at least 3 dinosaur museums/exhibits in Utah that I know of.

But how to preserve it from flaking apart?

You two are LOTS of help!!! ;)

Well my darling, you go take a trip to one of the museums where they have some prints on display and you ask them "How do you keep them form eroding" and "would that process be the same for coal".....

or......

You take a trip to cali with your giant footprint (which is pretty darn cool and you know we all want to see pictures of it!) and sneak into the le brea tar pits, dip it and run. but how you will get it over the fence when you are trying to escape is beyond me! LOL

Oh you might want to call the Paleontology Dept at Utah State they might be able to tell ya.

Oh here is a member website for friends of paleo located out in salt lake.

DS just left for college. One of his upcoming classes is dinosaurs. May be they'll discuss that. I'll ask. This may take until Christmas.

Legzz, after I posted I did exactly what you said and wrote to a university. Still waiting for a response...hope its not as long as Kicker's will be, lol.

I wasn't aware there were any tar pits in CA. Velly intellesting.

Thanks for the website, but they're not having any meetings for about 2 weeks. I wanna know NOW!!! ;)

Yep, Tom, we've got lots of coal. :)
