Cheap Eats: Favorite very inexpensive meals

Hi,
Do you have have any favorite very inexpensive meals that you cook, put together, or find?

I had a friend who years ago had a male friend who used to take her to high tea at the hotels in Miami Beach for free food. They did not last very long together.

Here is my bread pudding recipe:
eggs, milk, old bread, vanilla, small amounts of sugar
Bake until done. Depending on the amount of ingredients, it would last me almost a week.

lentil soup with a lot of seasoning and carrots, peppers and onions
now also eating rice and beans with a lot of seasoning...
good for the Ornish diet too

ok this is going to be pathetic but here goes

i'm almost embarrassed but a lot of my cheap eating was when i was also depressed, and did not cook. it would loosely fall under the category of "find" ... i.e. fast food.

taco hell - plain bean burritos. (can be refrigerated/frozen and microwaved)

micky d's - when they ran cheeseburgers 2 for a dollar. again, eat one and freeze the other for tomorrow. don't nuke for more than ~ 40 seconds or the bread gets hard.

ramen noodles. i'm talking the kind that come folded dry with a seasoning packet, and you have to cook them in a pot.

finally. albertsons brand (just pick cheapest) 10 pack hot-dogs with plain white bread. broil the hot dogs on foil. wrap one hot dog with one slice white bread. top with tabasco ideally. 2 to a meal.

I like those ramen noodles that come in a cup, comfort food with 2 days worth of sodium....

I'm with Bizi... Ramen Noodles!! My boys will eat those anytime they possily can- and so can I. Also mac/cheese.

I like to put a whole chicken in a crock pot on low for 6-7 hours seasoned with various spices. I pre-skin it before I put it in the crock pot. After de-boning the chicken I put it in the fridge for 2 meals or one meal and snacks for the boys. Usually the boys like to eat the chicken as tacos. Not sure how that came about. Then we use the rest as chicken sandwiches.

Something I learned a year ago. If you spray the crock pot with butter spray before you put the food into the crock pot it will help clean up really easy. The food doesn't stick or get goey.

Bread Pudding makes me druel. My mom made that all the time when I was growing up. I loved that- it was such a treat!! Yummy!!

oh i love the cup-a-ramen's too... (but dey mo' spensive.... the cook-it-yourself ones were 5 for a dollar, 6 if they were on special!)

i was always somehow fascinated by the cups though....... at how they could have pre-cooked-and-redried everything so it would all puff out just right after standing for 1 (3?) minute with boiling water. sometimes i'd poke mine and let it stand a little longer than it said. the peas were harder to re-hydrate, hee hee. but i seriously found the whole process just.... amazing! (and the result very yummy.)

my fav way to eat those was with a spork... (collected, of course, on taco hell burrito runs).

they cost a dollar here and I let them stand for about 5 minutes with a glass cup on top to let them steam hold the heat in. I like plain old chicken but have had something spicy before that I liked!

yes a buck is still cheap... they probably cost even less when i was buying them... but the cook-in-pot ones were more than twice as many noodles, and cost about 20c each then!!! (must be more now... but probably still a a fraction of the cost of the cup kind.)

it's just a different product. you pay for the extra processing, extra goodies in it, and the convenience. i used to like those to take to work. they don't really make a meal for me, but better than nothin. in school we could get them from the vending machines in the labs too.

i remember getting spicy flavored kinds in the wrap, but not in the cup. unless "oriental" flavor is spicy - but i don't think so. cup-wise, i like chicken, shrimp, and "oriental" flavors myself. :)

btw.... i have no idea what any of these things sell for where i live now and i don't want to find out! LOL! they're probably considered "gourmet" :D like campbell's soup - which costs around 5 bucks a can (3 something euro).

speaking of campbells, when i was a freshman i used to make up campbell's soup in my room - in a hot pot! :D pretty economic dinner but the folks on my hall didn't so much appreciate the lingering aroma of cream of asparagus.

raw ramen

Hi,

I've only cooked those noodle things a few times. A couple of times I added an egg for a sort of egg drop soup.

Several times I borrowed them from my roommate's side of the cupboard and I ate them raw -- crunchy snack.

How about this desert of Jello Ramen? (you have to cook the noodles before mixing them w/ the jello):
