Alan has a Vitamin D Deficiency

Now this is strange. At his last blood test, his Vitamin D level was 30.

Last week he went for his 3 month blood work. He got the results today when he went to see his doctor. His Vitamin D Level is 9.5

He takes 6000 a day of D3 . And he NEVER goes in the sun. Never!!!

So he was given a prescription for 50,000 of vitamin D to be taken once a week.

Now his B-12 level was 3257.

He takes it like I do, 5000 sublingually every day.

I said "maybe the B-12 is leeching the Vitamin D out of your body?" See, I have no idea.

Any advice is welcome, believe me.

Why on earth would this man have a Vitamin D level of 9.5?

I have two children with vitamin D deficiencies. In the sun non-stop. They said it must be hereditary and we will never know why they cannot utilize natural vitamin D and will need to take Vit D all their life. They both failed to grow until their vitamin D levels have become more controlled. It is weird but they told me sometimes you just don't have an answer. I hate that answer.

Hi Stewy.

I totally agree. I hate that answer too!!

I never knew this could be hereditary.

Thanks for the info.

The D given by doctors on RX is ergocalciferol and thought to be very inferior to D3 which is over the counter.

More explanation here:

Quote:

Ergocalciferol does not exist in detectable quantities in the human body, only in tiny quantities in plants and as such is "unnatural" when in the human body. You can not get any appreciable ergocalciferol by eating vegetables. Ergocalciferol is metabolized to various substances in the body, some of which are not normally present in humans, although these metabolites have never been shown to be dangerous. There is also some evidence that ergocalciferol is more toxic in overdose, which is curious as it is only about half as potent as the naturally occurring vitamin D, cholecalciferol. Your body also metabolizes ergocalciferol more quickly than cholecalciferol.
RX form 50,000 football shaped liquigel blue green in color is ergocalciferol D2----INFERIOR

OTC is D3, cholecalciferol, or bioactive natural D and preferred.
Not expensive.

I get you on this. I did the research last night. Try explaining this to Alan. He will only do what Dr. Fred gives him.

So I have to try and make it up in other ways. What about diet. He's a vegetarian and not about to change. He sleeps all day and wakes up at about 5 (although this is a very recent thing). So if he does go out it's not in the daytime.

I don't know what to do about him. I can't change him. He's 63 years old. I guess we'll have to wait and see what happens at his next blood test.

Is there any food with Vitamin D that I can sneak into him (in his sandwiches, (for example, last night I made him a tuna sandwich and I piled on the Sprouts). He loved it.

Thanks ,

Melody

Nope.... no appreciable food source. Only sunlight.

Get him to watch the YouTube medical video... it is like TV after all.

Mrs. D.

I remember (in my case) years ago, for whatever reason, a doctor had me under a special lamp in his office. Don't know why.

Is there a sun lamp, or similar product, that we can buy, plug in, (let's say he's on the computer), and it can shine Vitamin D down on him? Or am I in a fantasy world?

I'm going to look this up anyway. One never knows.

I don't know why I even bother, he bit my head off this morning. I suggested that he sleep on the couch in the living room because the people downstairs in the basement are having their bedroom re-done (walls, etc,) and there's drilling (right underneath our bedroom). I could NEVER sleep with all that racket but Alan seems to be able to sleep through anything.

So I just mentioned that because of all the noise, he might want to consider sleeping in another room until all the work is finished downstairs.

Well, you thought I committed a crime. He said "what are you trying to do, kick me out of my room". I just looked at him and went out to breakfast.

Right now they are doing the construction and he's sleeping in the bedroom. Do not know how he does it. As he explained this morning. "If I could do this in the army, I can do it now"

I guess he thinks I baby him too much.

lol

Look what I just found!!

I know him, he'll never go for it. But I'm going to look at other sites too.

Never knew about this.

That is a lot of money, and potentially dangerous.

Sun lamps and tanning booths, are hard to deal with and may deliver too much of the UV and damage the skin.

Pennies a day for D3.

I just saw a video on youtube from this Doctor in England who speaks about how most of England has a Vitamin D Deficiency. I'm sending it to Alan so when he goes on the computer, he'll at least see the video.

I mean 10 minutes a day is NOTHING. He would never buy that lamp, but I just wanted to see if one existed.

And because his doctor said: 'Don't take the store bought D anymore, take the prescription", well what do you think Alan is going to do?

Oh well.

Time will tell

I do thank you for your help. You have literally saved my life countless times.

Will update on this subject on his next blood test.

Thanks much

Melody
