Female MS Volunteers Needed for Research

The National MS Society and the National Institutes of Health (NINDS) are funding a team of investigators at sixteen medical centers across the U.S. to conduct a two-year, placebo-controlled clinical trial testing treatment with the estrogen of pregnancy (estriol) in MS.

All 150 women with relapsing-remitting MS will take CopaxoneŽ (glatiramer acetate, Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd.) in combination with either oral estriol or oral placebo. Patients previously treated with an interferon or CopaxoneŽ may be included.

The estriol trial is taking place at sixteen medical centers across the U.S. Women between 18-50 who are diagnosed with relapsing remitting MS and are interested in participating in this clinical trial should contact the nearest site to discuss their eligibility:

Contact: For more information, contact the study at the sites on
(NCT00451204) on ClinicalTrials.gov.

Copaxone would be free for two years. If that helps anyone who wants to be one it.

I found it, the Clicical trial site.

or the where the MS centers are listed.

I checked into this study awhile back. Before they were so actively recruiting. I opted out early on because of the requirement to go off of your DMD for 3 months prior to starting the trial. The last time I went off C, the MS knocked me off my feet- literally barely able to walk.
I would SO love to enroll, but the requirement still stands and I cannot risk it. But I say go for it!!

maybe that is why they are recruiting so aggressively!

When I was on Copaxone and had an insurance change my MS Specialist/Researcher Neuro said, I could be without "C" for 5 months and still begin again without starting over. He felt it stayed in the body for that long, in the lymph nodes.

I got approved right away again, so it wasn't an issue, but that was his medical opinion.

Maybe three months without "C" is not that bad for most people missj. Sorry it was for you.

PwMS could ask their Neuro if they want to get into a Clinical trial. Others may never have tried "C" yet, and want to. It isn't a very big trial. I thought they did one like this before.

I would like to see a trial of Estrogen alone, but Teva would not support that. ;) Lol

This is EXACTLY what i've preached about and fought FDA over. They banned Estriol in 2008. I argued with FDA for a year. 1 neuro dropped me because I had FDA fax IND or NDA (i forget) form directly to his office so he legally could scribe it. WYETH went to FDA and caused the ban. WYETH was found GUILTY of using ghost writers claimed to be world known doctors. A few months after WYETH was found guilty (they make PREMPRO the alternative for more $$$) ah i'll stop here.

I took estriol 4mg. I stoppped because it lowered my progesterone by half. I can't afford both so when I see my neuro over the weekend, I'm asking for prog and estriol in 1 compounded pill for less $$. Estriol was loved amongst menopause. Boy did they ---- when it dissapeared.

Estriol is 1 of the 1st things if not THE first thing I posted about when I joined Neurotalk.

I would love to be involved. I felt great during pregnancy. Unfortunately, I am allergic to Copaxone.

Do you think they will have other studies in the future with other drug combinations?

If you's have open minded neuro, he/she can write the script for you to try. It has to be compounded at a compound pharmacy. 4mg is what I tried, 8mg is what trial was based on my old neuro showed me. And like I said, getting estriol from the outside, your body (or at least mine) made less progesterone so have that compounded with it (cheaper then 2 scripts). I'll be starting 4mg of each Tuesday if my neuro writes them to be 1 script. 1/2 price.

And if ANY of you know someone pregnant, PLEASE get their estriol, estrone, estradiol & progesterone levels at 3 6 9 months for me!!! Ive asked so many but they're affraid of needles. $30 each here in Fl.
