Long Term Care - Please Help!

Hello all,

My name is Karla Johnson and I am a 67 year old woman from Texas (yeehaw! :winky: ). Here is my situation, I hope someone has advice for me as I really need it!

I have self diagnosed myself with the early stages of alzheimer's disease. My mother got it as well and I went through the whole process from start to current day (she is in now in a nursing home). Anyways, I was able to find a website that guided me through the application process for Long Term Care in my state (LongTermCareInsuranceFinder.com) and now that I have the quote back for how much it is going to cost me, I don't know if I can afford it! I have looked everywhere and it seems the free quote I got back from them was one of the lowest so that is not the problem, it is just that I have been out of work for quite some time and my husband is long passed away. My funds are running out and I am not sure where to turn next. I fear that I will become a financial burden to my family if I can not afford to pay for this Long Term Care Health Insurance which I think I will very desperately need soon.

Does anyone have any suggestions as where I may seek state or government funding for my Long Term Care payments? Any information would be greatly appreciated as I am losing my mind day by day over this (literally!). Thank you!

Hi,
I have been taking care of my mother in law who has Alzhimers for over two years now. I don't know of any program to help you pay for long term care insurance. I do know how expensive it is since I looked into getting it for my parents.
You mentioned you did not want to be burden to your family. I hope you will talk with them about your feelings that you are having symptoms. Since your family has been through this with your mother you know better than most what to expect. If you have children maybe you all could go in together to help pay for the long term care insurance. Just an idea. I know I would glady do that with my siblings and parents.
I know since your already a caregiver you know this but I hope that you talk with your doctor and are on the medications that help maintian your memory and that you are telling your family so they can look out for you. Also, don't let your doctor just make the assumption that because your mother has alzhimers you do also. So many forms of dementia are labeled as alzhimers and a good doctor can check to see if your symptoms might be caused by something that is more treatable. :grouphug: We are all praying for better treatments or a cure for this.

I know there are care facilities that Medicaid or Medicare will pay for.
I know that's a separate issue from your Long Term Care ins question.
But you may want to look and see what is available for you before paying for LTC ins.

There is an article here on paying for long-term care.
