Parkinson’s symptoms relieved

Removing the part of the brain that controls habitual movements could relieve symptoms in Parkinson’s disease sufferers.

A team of scientists from the University of Sheffield believe that removing part of the basal ganglia that controls habitual movement could help sufferers regain smooth movements. Removing this part of the brain means goal-directed movements are not competing with distorted inhibitory signals from the malfunctioning habitual control system.

I think real understanding is lacking so is the desire for it. Why should a multi multi billion industry based on pumping ldopa into our bodies search for an understanding which may cut its bread and butter..
In the strict business sense this would be insensible, wouldn't it?

i'm queasy about this whole theory

I'm not comfortable with this whole habit theory; perhaps I'm not defining habit corrrectly in my mind. The word automatic could be substituted? I just don't get it; need it in bio terms what is actually occcurring. Simple bio terms. Oh dear -I'm a nerd!

Meds you can stop, DBS you can have explanted, destroy the basal ganglia - you can't undo or resurrect. And they wonder why it is difficult to find human lab rats. No thank you.
