MOVIE "Love & Other Drugs"causinng buzz

The media is having a hay day with this one. Today, Gyllenhaal (Co-star in "Brokeback Mountain") and plays a pharmaceutical rep, was on Live with Regis & Kelly talking about the movie. Anne Hathaway stars as his girlfriend (who plays the role of a 20+ woman with young onset Parkinson's ).

"In a recent interview with Reuters, Hathaway talked about love, how she prepared for her role, and about life since "Brokeback," but one thing she would not talk about was her battle with depression."

The article continues
"Concerning her performance in the film, which is currently gaining Oscar buzz, Hathaway said that she "watched a lot of YouTube videos" of people with Parkinson's. She also "spoke with people who have it at different stages of their diagnosis. There was always an awareness to keep it authentic...we had to be really specific about when her symptoms manifested themselves and when they didn't."

Watched YouTube?!?! I can hardly wait to see how she plays this role. I have seen snips of he movie, and she certainly never looked like a PWP.
(But then, some of us don't appear to have PD either)

There are lots of sexy scenes, which means it will be a highly watched movie. Here's a trailer (if you dare! lol) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TO0X4DQZKqk

I also saw a trailer for this movie. There's a snip from a coffee shop. Watch the hand holding the coffee cup and the last two fingers that rhythmically tap it.

That trailer made me cry. I know there is still a lot you can do when you have Parkinson's, but it is all the goals and hopes you had for the future which are erased that is so chilling. Without goals, life becomes very much today and today only. Once a poster wrote that she approached PD by telling herself if she can do or perform a particular task or action today, she would still be able to do the same action tomorrow. That, of course is not true. Reality check: today is the best you will be, tomorrow, a little less, and so on. I told someone recently that PD has cheated me, but it has cheated my husband and chidren as well. They have to watch what is happening to me.I try to hide it, but they still see.

Lots of PWP input

I thought her tremor looked really authentic in the trailer. They filmed the movie in Pennsylvania, and consulted with the large PD group in western PA. I also heard that Patti Lightner in Harrisburg was included. They used the talents of Lucy Roucis, an actor with PD from Denver, on screen.

I saw that, too!

I saw the coffee shop shake, too. But I wonder if they will bring out the "other" symptoms - the ones AnnT is talking about. So many people think PPD is only a tremor - how I wish!

I am going to be one of the first to see this movie - mostly out of curiosity.

Good Idea from Jackie!

Excerpt from news article:
(Jackie) Hunt Christensen, a board member for the Parkinson's Association of Minnesota, has written two books on her experience. But to have Anne Hathaway portray someone with the same struggles is a pretty big deal.

Unfortunately, she is having brain surgery the day the movie comes out. She said, "I really want to see it. I wish there was a way I could do it."

Still, she is happy the movie addresses not only the disease but how tough it can be on relationships. Speaking about her husband, and getting choked up, she said, "A lot of relationships don't last and I've been blessed with a really good guy."

When I read this, I thought, we could ALL write a letter to the editor or an Op Ed in our local areas! So what are you waiting for?
