Has Anyone Tried Biofeedback?
Saw the neurologist yesterday and he wants me to try biofeedback for managing the over stimulation challenges i'm having.
has anybody tried this and if so did it help? thanks for any help, Marilee |
There are two different types of biofeedback or neurotherapy.
There is volitional neurofeedback and non-volitional neurotherapy. In volitional neurofeedback, you try to cause your physiological responses to change by conscious effort. In non-volitional neurotherapy, the device inputs some stimuli to try to cause the brain to react differently. The stimuli can be electro-magnetic, sound, and light. Volitional neurofeedback is well researched and safe. It can cause a mental fatigue problem if the subject has to work too hard or for too long. It can help with learning brain relaxation skills and such. In non-volitional neurotherapy, there is much less research. It is usually only researched by the maker of the device. Examples of non-volitional neurotherapy are ROSHI, LENS, and another. If I can remember the name of it, I will update this post. None of the non-volitional neurotherapy systems has been approved by the FDA for treatment of PCS, regardless of the claims of the makers. It can be expensive as most treatment programs require 10 to 20 treatments before changes can be seen, if at all. I have heard good reports from volitional neurofeedback. Learning to sense your body's reaction to stimuli and how to change its reaction can be empowering. Others on this forum have reported adverse events from non-volitional neurotherapy. Hope this helps. My best to you. |
Thanks much Mark. You have once again been very helpful and really quick. Your post will help me to clarify ahead of time which one we're talking about. I'm happy to hear that some have had this be helpful. The next thing is to sort out the insurance...
I"m learning a ton about the challenges and difficulties associate with insurance. I just started the LTD process and have decided to get some legal advice to figure out how best to navigate the process. I'm finding it to be overwhelming as I'm sure most people do. at any rate, i appreciate your information on biofeedback. heading off for a nap now. warm regards, marilee |
Volitional Neurofeedback new term
About 3 years back I suffered a tremendous amount of pain throughout my body. I was cripple for 2 and a half years. I'm thinking that I used volitional neurofeedback to rehabilitate myself. I used a lot of self talk, visualization, etc. etc. But I didn't use any of the computerized devices to measure the response my body was having to the techniques. I don't want to call my healing techniques biofeedback because of the lack of devices. At the same time I was using techniques that are found in Biofeedback. But the volitional neurofeedback seems like a very accurate term.
