Windows Vista speech recognition

I just got this up and running on Tuesday and I'm surprised how accurate it is. I had an old version of dragon naturally speaking on my old computer but it made so many errors it was hard to use and on top of that it made my computer freeze a lot. This doesn't seem to make many errors and runs nicely on my computer. Just thought I'd mention it in case anyone has Windows Vista wants to give it a try. It's pretty easy to setup, you just need a microphone. The hardest part is learning all the commands. I can't type at all so it sure beats the old "hunt and peck" when you're in pain.

Google Chrome Voice Recognition

My Internet Explorer won't load without freezing so I started using Google Chrome. Problem is, my windows voice recognition doesn't work with it. Anyone have any ideas about how to either fix Internet Explorer, or, a voice recognition program that works with Google Chrome?

I did little bit of investigation on the subject. As far as I can gather Vistas "Windows Speech Recognition" will not work in the way you desire in Chrome without a gimmicky or convoluted work around.

My (probably frustrating, I'm sorry!) advice would be to attempt to fix the application you knew it worked with (IE) if at all possible, before investigating other options. Have you tried troubleshooting/ reinstalling IE to see if you can fix the problem?

Thanks. I was going to try reinstalling IE but when I looked in "programs" I couldn't find it anywhere. Am I looking in the wrong place?

I think the best path for doing a re-installation is following the instruction path on Microsofts support website. In Chrome (since IE isn't working) I'd navigate to here:

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/i...er/download-ie

Hopefully that can help make things functional again.

or something here might help- various tips/troubleshooting for IE-
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/w...q=IE+reinstall

If IE & VR worked for awhile , then something changed for it to stop working.. so try either reinstall or re set it as mentioned on one of the results listed.

The VR still works with your other programs , correct?
Only the IE browser is non functional with the VR?

I just read this too-
[If the program you’re using doesn’t automatically accept dictation, you can enable it by selecting Enable dictation anywhere on the Speech Recognition Options page. For more information, see Turn on dictation for all programs.]

Thats great to hear. I haven't been able to use SR either but some webpages I go to are not designed IE which is a pity. I will Try Jo's tips and see if there is a way of getting it working in other browsers as so many internet pages these days are not supported and scripted to work in IE.

I am just going through this with Chrome to see if it works https://chrome.google.com/webstore/s...&utm_medium=et

Problems again

Windows downloaded some updates a couple of days ago and then Internet Explorer wouldn't work again. I uninstalled Internet Explorer 9 and it's working again right now, but I have a feeling it's going to be a problem every time it installs new updates. Pain in the butt.

Google Chrome runs so much better on my computer than IE, I just wish speech recognition would work with it.

Problems again following windows updates

Windows installed some updates a couple of days ago and speech recognition wouldn't work again. I uninstalled some of the updates and now it's working. To keep that from happening again, I turned off the automatic update installation. Hopefully that will solve the problem.

It looks to me like my computer has two versions of Internet Explorer, 32 bit and 64 bit. It looks like it updated to the 64 bit program when speech recognition wouldn't work. I think speech recognition only works with the 32 bit version.
