What do you do for lumbar pain relief?

I have a question.....What do you do for pain relief?
Do you use medications only?
What works best for Spinal Spondylosis phase III, Herniated disks L5-L3,
My docs have me on T3 and Tizanadine (which I keep telling them is not working)

Once again Hi.
I have been in Pm now for almost 8yrs and have tried just about all of it, I won't go in to all I'm on yet.
Are you looking for a medication to help with pain or another alternative?
I know that ice helps me, have you tried PT yet?
A little more info would help.

Hi Linda

I am looking for pain relief, cannot take NSAIDS B/C of gastrointestinal issues (causes bleeding) I do not think that the tizanadine is working, told my neurosurgeon and all he did was up the dose.

A unfortunate side of DDD and Spinal Spondylosis is that I cannot stretch my legs out straight (hamstrings are alway very tight)

I do ice and heat, the physical therapy was discontinued because of the A/C osteoarthritis I have in my right shoulder. Started cortisone shots (about a year now) but because of intense intractable pain have requested surgery to correct it (they take a part of the clavical out)

I take T3's (two times per day - but the relief is only about 4 hours long which leaves me in intense knock down pain for half a? day).

I cannot take anti-depressents (tried that in the past and they really messed me up i.e trazadone, paroxitine, and a couple more)

neurtontin caused side effects that mimicked MS, (hand and knee twitched, eye problems, double vision, caused depression, felt unsteady, loss of equilibrim and could not focus.....

So I am looking for alternatives..............does anyone have any suggestions?

Hi!
I know a very specific stretching exercise that will absolutely relieve the hamstring tightness..it also curbs the lower back pain almost immediately. It might be hard to explain, but I am willing to try if you are game. Let me know!

This isn't much to tell and is not some miracle cure but when my lumbar herniations and other problems start giving me fits I lie down on my back, pull one knee towards my chest, hold it...for a ten count then do the other and repeat this about three to five times. It seems to stretch out muscles back there and gives some pain relief in time. It will help you get rest before sleep and help you get out of bed in the morn.

Not much but has helped me for 15 years.
