The Secret - positive thinking?

Anyone else watch this movie or read the book?

I just finished the movie and while majority of whats in it is already what I've been practicing preaching - some of it sounds like mumbo jumbo - energy fields, vibrations, just wishing for what you want, etc.

But in truth, it make sense to me. Positive psychology is such a big deal. And if you spin it towards just being more positive, positive thinking, knowing what you want, wishing and keeping on track of your dreams, then it begins to make sense.

So some of the things I jotted down as I was watching, I thought might help out some of you too or atleast might be fun to do here.

A list of what you "want"
A list of what you are "grateful" for
A list of the people you care about and the things about them you love/like - not dislike

It's about training your brain to think about what you are happy with, what you want, and are grateful for already, rather than what you don't like, hate, are upset and angry with. Teaching yourself to have happier, positive emotions rather than negative ones.

And basically if you think about positive things enough, feel what it would be like, and make actions towards making it happen - they will?

Which is a formula I've already seen: thoughts + feelings --> actions/behaviors

I also liked the idea of making a collage of all the things you want in life and want to make happen. So what do you think about being more optimistic rather than pessimistic, glass half full than half empty? Those people we always see that life just seems so EASY for, is this their secret?

**hugs*** missed you all - hope you had happy holidays and a new year to come!

The person who wrote that book has a new book out called 'The Power' I think.

What I remember from the movie/book (saw movie, read book) is a scene from the movie where someone wished for checks to come in the mail instead of bills, then all of a sudden they got checks in the mail.

I don't think it is as easy as that. I mean, I wish I was a handsome guy married to a caring wife whom I loved with all my heart, but reality is that none of that has come true. :)

I guess it is good to be positive in life, I personally have troubles doing that. Where everyone's life could be better, it could also be worse.

The Secret was an enjoyable movie and the book was a fun read (I think, as I know I read it, and I get bored fast).

Wishnomore, I wish I knew the real 'secret'. Maybe someone in the forums has it?

ahhhhhhhh..The Power of Positive Thinking? Norman V.Peal? or are you talking about a new book/movie? Haven't seen or read this but firmly believe in it. We are capable of redirecting those negative thoughts and feelings if we only force ourselves to learn a new way.

Pters words:

As to the thoughts, I will be the first to say they are exhausting and, as I have said previously, they tire us to a point where we honestly believe suicide is the only solution. It is not. BEFRIEND and TALK. These thoughts are a part of you, for better or worse. I believe strongly in a physiological connection with suicidal thoughts. Our fear of the thought stimulates a negative physiological reaction which appears to give the negative thoughts enhanced power over us. Step back for a moment and place yourself in an imaginary situation. You see a child running into a busy roadway...you run quickly to save this child from oncoming cars...feel the reaction rising in your body. The adrenaline pounding throughout your body and brain. Now the rescue is over, your alone, feel the exhaustion of your body and mind.

You are rescuing yourself daily, hourly, every few minutes. Each thought envokes a physiological reaction with the end result being exhaustion. Befriend this thought. Treat it as you would the child who ran into the pathway of cars. Hold it, talk to it, teach it that there is another way to walk the roads of life. Post it here and allow others to comfort it. Do not be ashamed of it. What is it really but a thought that wants attention. Understand now, I did not say a PERSON who wants attention but a THOUGHT that wants attention from that person. It is the fight against the thought that tires us and makes us vulnerable to enactment of the thought.

I cannot give you a reason to live. I can, however, take away your reason for dying. An untrained unaccepted thought is not justification for death.

I do believe there is substance to this but, not so easy. It is especially difficult for those who suffer physical illness that affects their mentality, or mental illness in and of itself. It takes a lot of practice, and self-discipline. It also requires characteristics of humility, patience, and a dose of selflessness. These are not so easy to develop. It is worth it though, in the long view.

I also believe that to expect to be happy all the time is not a viable goal. In our human drama we experience all kinds of disappointments and sorrows that have to be processed. Tears are not abnormal. We are human. Now I believe that finding a place of peace deep within despite whether I am very happy at the moment or undergoing some grief is possible and attainable. Developing more of the characteristics of selfless love, I think, is also important to reach this kind of goal. It's not an easy path, but, I think, will lead to a deeper sense of happiness and peace. All we need do is to look at the life of Christ Himself. I don't think he was happy and positive all the time. Sometimes, I think we set unrealistic goals for ourselves and others.

We are here to learn, and in that learning we make mistakes, and they are not always happy ones, but, if we learn from it, then it's all to the good, in the long run. I hope that made sense......I'm off to get ready for work where I can practice more of the above..... :grouphug:

Cancer and Positive Thinking

Although antidepressants cause insomnia for me, Lexapro has the least side effects. I got back on it when my cancer got the better part of my positive thinking. I have been coping well with chemical aid until Fridays dose of Radioactive Iodine. Mt two remaining parathyroids survived the surgery and were doing well until Fridays dose. The problem is nausea, vomiting, diarhea, and numb chin. The vomiting carried away most of my meds. I have an appt today to do blood work and evaluate the parathyroids. I pray they recover. R u listening, God? Thank you and amen. And thanks that I have survived so far.

This has been plaguing me the past few weeks. It's been a while since I watched the movie and have been wanting to refresh and watch it again to gain back what I was feeling afterwards. Its nice to have the notes jotted down that I made immediately after and posted here.

Anyways, moods like mistilis do get in the way. I realized this today when I was a bit cranky but then got to work and have been surprisingly "happy" today. Which is a bit new for me and I can't help but wonder how long it will last. And then there are days when I roll out of bed miserable. And how can you train yourself to be in a better mood? How can you change your thoughts to be more positive? How can you change YOURSELF if you are more of a negative thinking person? Thought modifying perhaps, thought regulating, thought changing -all so very hard. What to do.... especially since our days and moods may be biological or determined by chance (or is it, I did get a good nights rest)....

So does this mood/positive thinking effect the outcome and rest of our day - as the Secret suggests. Will my day today be better, more beneficial, more exceptional because my mood is helping me get things done, not scaring away others, "attracting" good things my way? Or is this rubbish?

All I know for certain is to keep hope alive. So to me... today will be a good day. :)

I can only hope you all have such a good day too, especially tied.
