Runny Nose
 

Before I began taking medicine for MG, my nose would run (somewhat) when I eat, especially with any type of grain etc. Now, since I am on 90 mg of Pry? geneic for Mestinon, my nose runs so bad, I have to go out of the room, blow my nose forever it seems. It runs to the point where I sometimes have to hold a napkin to my nose before I can leave the table. I don't like to go out and eat in public anymore. Having lunch with my coworkers has become embarrasing. Does anyone else have this problem since beginning the medicine. If so, what did you do. This is only when I eat and it seems to be with anything I eat.

I don't have that problem. Talk to your neuro about it. Mestinon can cause increased salivation, bronchial secretions and sweating. It may be that 90 mg. is too much for you to take or an "overdose" for you.

Not everyone has the exact same amount of loss of muscle receptors by the antibody attack. Therefore, not everyone needs the same amount of acetylcholine. And Mestinon use also depends on how much acetylcholine you "use up" by what activities you do. More is not always better with Mestinon.

Mestinon makes my nose run, too--or it has in the past. My doctor told me that the increased salivation was a side-effect that would ease up after a while. I don't know if that's true, or if it goes for the nose-running, too. I'm just passing on what he said.

During the time when I first started Mestinon I had an extreme runny nose, especially when my neuro had me double my dosage. I found that taking a smaller dose and drinking more water makes this problem go away. More water is the best solution for me for overcoming all of the side effects of mestinon such as runny nose and excessive saliva.

Be sure to let your doctor know about this. I hope you are not allergic to Mestinon, but it is a possibility.

I've suffered with seasonal allergies all my life. It was not uncommon for my nose to run, especially in the spring & fall. Since starting Mestinon, for about 30 minutes after taking my first dose of the day, I usually have a mild runny nose. It only happens with my first dose. Also as Desert Flower has mentioned, plenty of water helps many of the side effects.

As others have mentioned, a Mestinon allergy or overdose is always a possiblity.
