Dig into your memory...
What was your first paying job? I'm sure many of you were baby-sitters.
When I was 14 I started my own car wash/wax/detailing company "Classi Chassi Auto Detailing". I started doing my cul-de-sac and grew it to having my best friend and I washing about 20 cars a weekend then at 17 I got a small local dealership to let us do their cars on weekends, we ended up "hiring" 2 other people to help. I ALSO had a part-time job working as a bag-boy at Safeway (grocery) for about 10 hours a week. Classi Chassi paid for my first car, I paid for 1/2 and my dad paid for 1/2. It was a 1972 VW Bug, That was in 1985. I LOVED that car. It was yellow and I put a Blaupunkt Stereo and big woofers in it. along with an alarm. It cost $1,400. I kept it for 3 years before it died a death of engine explosion. That leads to a second questin.... What was your first car/truck/vehicle? Can you tell I am cruising down memory lane? Man I miss my childhood. I wish it was 1986 all over again. |
Yes, babysitting was my first paying job. I "sat" at about seven different homes in our neighborhood. In my junior year of HS I got a job at K-Mart and worked there until right before I graduated.
My first car was a 1978 silver Camaro. I loved that car and thought I was just the bomb for having it! Two years later when I got married (yes, I was just a baby) we sold it. :( |
My first non-sitting job was Younkers @ Christmastime. I learned to gift wrap the most difficult of packages and to do it quickly! I was also taught how to set up and use their simple printing press, the kind where you set each letter, to make the signs you see over racks and on displays. That part of the job I really liked. I was a junior in HS. My next job was a year later, when I was a senior, my boyfriend's mom helped me get a job at the Art Center in the gift shop . . . now that job I loved!

My first job was working at the neighborhood bakery...too many goodies!! It closed by 6 pm so I could do my homework and see my beloved in the evening.
I never owned a car on my own...got married to my love young and we owned cars together...the first one we had as a married couple was a Gran Torino...the '72 model (before the ugly bumpers were ordered by the govt. It was baby blue with a white vinly top (remember those?:)). His dad wouldn't allow him to get a/c :confused:...but we loved that car. Traded it in when rust started bubbling to the surface. |
My first paying job was at the University of Dayton, scoring tests on an old fashion computer/scoring machine. I was 16 and made 50 cents per hour.:D
My first owned car was a 1964 Chevy Biscayne stick shift. Filled it up every 2 weeks for 6.00 and drove it till the next fill up.:D Those were the days, my friends.;) |
My first paying job was at a much younger age. Mom would pay me by the piece to iron. I very proudly starched and ironed my Dads shirts that he preached in. I think she was trying to help me earn money because I also got paid for ironing my baby brothers bibs!
I don't remember what my first car was. It was whatever my DH owned when we got married. We liked the Hondas when they first came out. It was a very boring car but good gas mileage. |
My first "real" job was at the Hidden Inn in the Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs. It was your basic tourist trap, selling everything from postcards & t-shirts to native jewely and rugs. The building's built into the back of one of the giant Gateway rocks, and is still there, though it is no longer used as a store. I think they gave it back to the Native American tribe that owned it once upon a time. It's really quite old.
My first car was a blue 1969 Dodge Coronet 440. Oh yeah, FAST car. |
My first real job was IN the home. I was 11 and it was my job to make sure the house was clean, and dinner was on the table when mom got home. I had chores before then, but once mom went back to work, I got the brunt of the house and NO ONE was happy esp me. My sis had an outside job baby sitting and would lie and say she had work on days she didnt want to help (which was often) and that left me holding the bag. I couldnt do after school activities because I had to get home.
My first real paid job was when I was 14 and ran away from home. I was allowed to stay for free in a broken down rental cottage if I kept the other ones clean. I was given a small amount of cash as well. The man was a harsh task master, and folks who stayed a week or a weekend in those lake side cottages were nasty! it was rare that someone left a tip, but you can bet they were quick to pick up the phone for fresh towels or the 12th roll of toilet paper. I did a good job, and was even taught how to do some basic repairs like a leaky sink or a plugged toilet, or how to change a lock. I learned alot there. |
My first job.... still my favorite job I ever had. I stumbled into a training company with my mom (she went to fill out papers), and the lady there asked me if I wanted a job. I said "sure, but I am only 14" that wasn't a problem. I was sent as a temp to the county in a T-Shirt Printing company where we trained people with physical and mental disabilities to be productive citizens. They also had a recycling facility, the t-shirt business, the embroidery business and a mailing center where all fo the county water and tax bills were processed. I worked there every summer until my senior year in high school where I was actually hired on with the company and I was able to work and go to school. Stayed after graduation. Problem was, I had to take a pay cut when I was hired directly and minimum wage just wasn't cutting it when I realized how much it would cost to pay for college.
With my last job (back when I was able to work) I worked for a computer recycling company. I was able to go back to job #1 and help set up a recycling program there and train the employees on computer breakdown. We would send them a pallet of computers to breakdown and they would take care of it for us. Granted, our own guys processed about 70 pallets a day so the one pallet a month wasn't a lot, but it was nice to bring them in on it and to be able to give them work. Actually, it was when I was first dx'd and I found out one of the trainer's wife had just been dx'd with PPMS. And it was during this time I had my first car... 1978 old cutlass supreme. I graduated high school in 98. The car was older than me. It was a gas guzzling hog. The radio was one of those metal push button doo dads that would change the station on it's own whenever it felt like it. The cigarrette lighter would randomly shoot out at people as you drove. The car was possessed. Man am I glad gas was less than $1.00 a gallon back then. I remember gas going over a dollar and how it took almost my whole paycheck to put gas in the car. |

My first paying job: typing correspondence for the admissions office of the private college I attended. My first car: brand new 1979 Chevy Chevette in olive green. Daddy paid $5000 cash for it. |
