PTSD and All-On-4 Dental Implants

Hi everybody,

I'm new here. Obviously. :p

I'm in the process of TRYING to get a full mouth reconstruction with what's called the All-On-Four Dental Implants but my debilitating symptoms of PTSD are making it very difficult. So here I am... hoping to find some support, maybe others who are going through something similar.

Thank you,
Francesca

Dental Implants & PTSD

Dear Francesca,

I just registered with NeuroTalk tonight because of your message. You said you are TRYING to get a full mouth reconstruction with the-all-on-4 dental implant procedure. Were you advised not to have this procedure done because of your PTSD? Are you waiting to have the surgery? Did you have have the surgery and experience post surgical complications related to your PTSD.

I had the all-on-4 dental implant surgery in November 2009 and have been experiencing painful symptoms for over 2 years. I was diagnosed with PTSD following a traumatic event in 2005. I included information about my PTSD on my intake form and listed my medications. For over 2 years I assumed my pain was caused from too much pressure on a small number of implants or possibly that I didn't have enough bone, especially on top.

I have been searching for answers about my pain and discomfort for a very long time. The doctors at the implant center are unable to find a cause for my painful symptoms. I finally went to my medical doctor in early January to talk with him about my mouth pain and debilitating headaches. My MD said my symptoms indicate "nerve disturbances" following oral surgery and prescribed Gabapentin.

Francesca, could you tell me more about your experience with "attempting" to have this procedure or your efforts to cope after having this done? Because you use the word "TRYING" I am thinking that the implant doctors are advising against the operation because of your PTSD. I am so sorry that you suffer from PTSD? Please know that others with PTSD truly understand and care. You have my support.

If others posting on this site believe that PTSD is contributing to my mouth pain I would appreciate hearing from you. Do any of you know if others with PTSD have difficulty following implant surgery. Thank you very much, S. Elizabeth

I regret my previous message

Dear Franesca,

I've never posted anything online before. It occurred to me after writing my previous reply that you may be having pre- dental surgery anxiety because of your PTSD. I regret giving you details about my post surgery with the-all-on-4 dental procedure. I know what it is to suffer from PTSD and I would never want to add to your fear. I don't know for sure if my concerns are related to my PTSD. The surgery itself was fine for me. I would say to keep taking your medications and give the surgeons details about your PTSD to see if it may have an affect on your outcome. Please know that I care and never intended to say something that would add to your anxiety. I simply misunderstood what you were asking in your post. S. Elizabeth
