Need help with Mozilla. Keeps freezing.

Hi. I have two browsers on my computer. Internet Explorer (which we rarely use), and Mozilla Firefox (which is our usual browser). Well, lately, every time I bring up Mozilla, I get the hourglass thing going on and on top it says "not responding"

And when I try and do control alt delete, well it takes a long time before it all goes away. I have uninstalled and re-installed Mozilla Firefox 3 times. No help.

The one thing I did not do (when I uninstalled it), was to uninstall the favorites, etc. I was afraid to do that.

So why would Internet Explorer work just fine, and why does Mozilla keep freezing. And I mean it does this over and over. I thought it may have been corrupted but 3 times? Something is going on here.

And I want to take the favorites from Mozilla and copy them to the bookmarks in internet Explorer.

It is NOT EASY. I went to Mozilla and did the Export HTML, but when i have to choose a place to put them, I DON'T KNOW WHERE TO PUT THEM.?

Any advice is most welcome.

when my FF acts odd I make a new profile to see if it is acting weird also.

Since it is the same after reinstalls , I wonder if it is something in your saved profile files - that is where your own particular settings , cookies, bookmarks area saved.

You can open this link in IE to do the steps if you want to try it- but you have to close FF to make the new profile.

It is pretty easy but if you do it make sure it 'asks you at start up' which profile you want to use (the default or the new one if you make one
- it just makes it easier for when you decide to use the new one all the time -or delete it. If you decide to use the new one you can import the saved or backed up bookmarks.

But read all the info about it first - the XP part is below the Vista & Win 7 section.
http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Managing%20profiles

Or installing the Flock browser might be simpler
it is nearly the same as FF and I believe it will ask to import FF bookmarks & settings for you. The default homepage is more focused on facebook & other social networking sites , but you can remove those and use the home page that you prefer.

for IE import of bookmarks/favorites
Open IE and go to File, down to Import/export
from another browser , and FF shows for me so click that-
I already have mine imported so didn't want to do it again
but it should work fine from that point on.

The newer versions of FF have been called "resource hogs". Log on with Explorer and compare the length of time delays.

Their problem forum discusses this at times. It will also take longer to close.

I have a slow open too. This is because of our free Avast and also the "looking for updates" feature. I've grown used to this now, but it is aggravating. If you try to click on things and "rush" it, you can freeze your computer.

When you sign on don't rush your computer at all.

One thing that really slowed us down, was the new Yahoo bar.
That can take a while to load some days too, depending on your DSL traffic. But I like the Yahoo bar, but I just tolerate it.
Our back up laptop doesn't have the Yahoo bar and it loads much faster!

There are ways to speed up loading...but that involves removing things from your desktop tray. I always get nervous about that... so we haven't tried it. But if you Google "slow start up fixes for Firefox" or something like that you will find articles about it.

I can't remember if there has been a recent update or not, because mine has been crashing much more than normal over the past few days. (actually it never normally crashes)

There is ALWAYS an update, IMO. :thud:

But I seem to recall that when FF started 3.0 is when the system hog stuff started. I looked it up back then.

Hi all.

Well, first things first. Last night, right after I posted the question, I discovered how to copy ff bookmarks over to IE. I did the Import from Firefox, and it did it.

However, trying to find it is another nightmare. There are so many other folders there when I click on the word Favorites, well, I found a folder called Mozilla favorites, but when I clicked on it, everything was in Alphabetical order, and over at Mozilla, when Alan clicks on his favorites, they are there in the order he likes.

So if we have to use IE, I have to figure out a way to have the favorites show up exactly the same way they do in ff.

I'll learn how to do this.

Now for the freezing part. This morning, I clicked on Mozilla and it NEVER came up. I clicked on IE and it came RIGHT up. Then after 2 or 3 minutes, Mozilla finally loaded. I have no idea why this is but I'm going to do as suggested and research those links.

Also, and I have no idea what Flock is, but I'll look into this also.

thanks much my trusty computer allies.

I shall persevere!!!!! And when I finish persevering, I shall go and eat my sprouts. Unlike Mozilla, they never let me down.

3 minutes sounds about right.

I'd do a scan anyway for malware... since you may have a trojan linking up and delaying you. But I suspect it is Firefox itself. You may have many things on the desktop tray... all waiting to set up.

I do a malware scan every day. Don't mean to sound like an idiot but I have no idea what the desktop tray is. I'm going to google it, and when I find it, I'll get rid of some of the start-ups.

Don't know if this matters, but Alan has MANY toolbars going on ON THE TOP OF THE SCREEN. Are these things loading up at the same time, and could that be the reason for the slow start up.

I mean, the top quarter of my screen has all these tool bars.

Good Lord.

thanks much

I have only one toolbar...Yahoo... and our laptops (2) do not.
The computer with the Yahoo bar is the slow start up one.

The laptops don't have that problem. The Win 7 laptop is slow about everything IMO, and I don't like it. But my old laptop with the new HD is very fast on start up. (it doesn't have much on it tho..and we only use it for photos on vacation, etc. It has wifi so is handy for traveling.)

This site is really good for common sense problems:

This link discusses slow start ups.

top 10 tips of 2010 including the one above.

Look around for other things, there too.

I personally think it is all the tool bars above. Some days the Yahoo one is REALLY SLOW .... I just get Firefox going, and leave and come back. Sitting here waiting makes it seem longer.

Well, this is a fine how do you do.

I went to Flock. I downloaded it. I added Facebook and youtube and it went through. I saw all my youtube on the right of my screen. I took the Flock tutorial. I downloaded it. It was 90% done. It takes a LONG LONG time to install Flock on the computer.

I was learning how to do it. I even imported all the favorites from Mozilla and I saw them.

I then was reading stuff about Flock and that they do not provide an icon to launch it from the desktop.

So 1. how does one get a desktop icon (one would think they would instantly put one on my desktop, no??

and 2. IT ALL DISAPPEARED.

That's right. It was 90% done. and I clicked on something and I cannot find my installation, my download. NOTHING.

So how can I get back to the Flock page where it shows you the progression and it had gotten up to 90%.

Do I have to do this ALL over again.

Because forget it. I just spent 30 minutes learning the stupid thing.

I AM NOW BACK TO HATING MY COMPUTER.

lol

UPDATE, UPDATE UPDATE.

Melody is a complete idiot. I went to Search, selected files and folders, typed in the word FLOCK, there it was, (and because I never looked for a desktop icon, I created one), then saw that there was already one on my desktop. I clicked on that, and it brought me to the FLOCK browser where it now said "progress is 75%" Don't know what that's all about. BUT I FOUND MY FLOCK.

Does that make me a goose???
