Surgery post-op

Hi guys,
Me again.

This is my 3rd day home from hospital. I am ok. This is now 6 days post-op. I still have foot drop. My concern is that since leaving hospital I have leg pain like sciatica in my bad leg. The surgeon thinks that the nerve was traumatised so it will continue to hurt. Since this is my 2nd discectomy at the same level, I remember the first one eleviated ALL leg pain. I know every surgery is different, but my concern is that something might still be pressing on nerve and if so my foot won't have a chance to heal.

The surgeon swares he got all the protruding disc material out and this is normal. I just don't understand enough I guess and I don't know what I should do now.
Anyone gone through this, or any thoughts would be appreciated. BTW dad has had 4 back surgeries and says no leg pain should be present.

Thank you,
Aussie

I am sure you must have concerns... It is my hope that you will improve with more time. You have had quite a bit of trauma and it has only been six days post op.

My best wishes are with you for a smooth recovery.

Thank you

Thank you for your reply. I have been unable to log on for some reason. I appreciate your comments, I am doing a bit better.:)

That is good, that you are showing improvements.

Surgical patients need good protein levels in food consumed and also zinc. This can help with the healing processes. Vit C can reduce some inflammation. 500mg tops/day.
And of course fish oil for the inflammation and healing of the nerves.

Soo glad you are doing better! YEAH!

Of course you feel like you've had an 'invasion' ...because you have!
I'd listen to Mrs D's recommendations and if you can? Do try to keep up on those things.
Don't forget also, that Mrs D has also discussed the balance some of us must maintain between supplements [Calcium, Magnesium and ViteD] to help offset those muscle tremors and such and that while this combo is mostly applied to bone? It also helps muscles a bit too.
Are you being scheduled for any PT? Good PT NOW rite after surgery could help you as you heal get the rite nerves stimulated and growing...as well as not losing ground for muscle tone in the recovery process..ASK? All they can do is say NO..and give you a reason or YES as you can tolerate it?
I Know you've been to unpleasant places and maybe now back to better? I for one? AM SO GLAD you are hurting LESS! :Head-Spin:!!!!!

Aussie, your symptoms are not uncommon after back surgery. Many times nerves suffer mechanical trauma as the surgeon tries to get exposure to the disc for its removal. As a result, you can experience the neuropathic symptoms you now have. These symptoms can remain present for many months and, in a small minority of cases, are permanent. Treatment is symptomatic while you wait for the nerves to heal. I hope you recover quickly!!

Aaahhh thank u so much for your post. It's been a very difficult experience and a lot I don't get. One day at a time I guess.

Aussie? Keep at it! Sounds almost trite....

BUT, after ALL you have gone thru and thru again? I truly HOPE that PT and this surgery can help you get part of your LIFE back.
Know that I'm pulling for you in my own little ways and often wish I could be of more help!
In the meantime? Go prove to them that you can knock their socks off with both knowledge and spunk!
