FYI:calcium intake

FYI,
I just found out today that I broke my collar bone.
I have been taking only 630mg of calcium on a daily basis.
I don't drink milk.
I knew that I was supposed to take it twice a day. But I would usually forget and only take it once a day.
I think I am going to ask my ortho for a bone density test.
when I was dieting...it was easy to forget about drinking milk to save the calories but you have to increase your calcium intake to make up for that.
I wish i had paid attention to this...maybe I would not have a broken collar bone if I had.

That does not sound like fun. I hope it heals up fast for you.

Bone fusion is suppressed by smoking and NSAIDs (and steroids).
So take tylenol if you can.

To maximize your absorption of any calcium you consume, make sure you are taking enough Vit D.

From a supplement, absorption is around 20-25% per dose.
25% at the higher end from calcium citrate form. But with Vit D you will absorb much more.

i read that about the nsaids, so will pick up some tylenol. i am getting 1400 mg of vit d3 from my multi and vit d supplement.

well I had my bone density tested yesterday and it showed some area of concern.
my number was a (-1.75) which is in the caution range. He told me to double up on my calcium intake and retest in a year. I forgot to ask for the vit d lab test.
so Now I am taking 1200mg of calcium plus getting some thru dairy though not consistantly.

There are other factors for bone density...

Magnesium
Vit D
B12
Vit K2 ( you seem to eat alot of green veggies tho)
adequate protein
Omega-3s

Calcium is only one part of it. And remember calcium is only absorbed in a limited fashion. It can be disturbed by taking acid blocking drugs. Carbamazepine, antibiotics long term, and some diuretics block calcium absorption.

i can't add anything to mrs d's advice. it was right on.
but, wanted to say i'm sorry for your broken bone.
you might talk to your pcp about some lab tests to check levels that mrs d mentioned.

and, there are certain calciums that are easier to absorb. i'd check with your pharmacist. i'm 61 and take 1200/day. 600 twice a day. but, i also drink milk and eat dairy.

i hope you heal up quickly. best to you.
