Japan Quake and tsunami

I just spent several hours watching the coverage of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan (tsunami is now heading for the rest of the Pacific Rim)

Feels like I just watched September 11th all over again. Watching dozens of cars getting washed thru what looked like farmland in Japan. Waves making a river run backwards.

I feel sick. After the quake and tsunami in Indonesia several years ago, I never thought I'd see that kind of video again. Only good thing about tonight's tsunami video. It was filmed far enough away that I could NOT see if there were any people in the water...Except for when you saw a car that was driving really fast trying to get away from the wave, and seeing the wave overtake it.

Too scary.

I need to sleep now. Hope I can.

Thanks for posting this. My church sponsors assister church in Sandai- near the epicenter and I am waiting to hear word on the damage. Since it is the middle of the night, probably won't hear anything until tomorrow. Very sad.

I just woke up. I was hoping the news about the deaths would be better. When I went to bed last night, they were only reporting about 45 being killed in the quake/tsunami. Sad to hear that hundreds were killed and the death toll is still going up. I was really hoping that it would stay low.

I was on Twitter last night when the quake happened, and I was getting real time updates on what was happening from people in Japan. I watch a late night talk show and tweet with other fans of the show on Fox News. The show was preempted last night because of the quake, but all the Twitter people that I talk with stayed up and watched the news reports with me.

I'd never watched a disaster happen on live (streaming on the internet from Japan) tv before. Everything was in Japanese, but the video I was seeing was fairly horrific. They were showing ships, not just little boats that had been in the harbor (probably in Sendai...maybe?) and they'd been tossed up onto docks on their sides. Saw one ship that looked like it'd just been picked up and placed gently on the ground, but the other two next to it were on their sides. They werent huge ships, but they were big enough that they were about equal in size to some of the buildings they were leaning against.

I think the worst video I saw was this huge wave full of buildings, cars, and buildings and cars that were ON FIRE, washing over what looked like a farming town. The water was turning black, I think because it was farmland. The dirty water looked the same color as good topsoil. You could see a few cars on a road or highway that were trying to outrun the wave. They didnt outrun it. (reporters said the wave was moving at 500mph!) It was really horrific to see. Like watching 9-11, made me cry to see it happen. I dont know if that video was live or not when I watched it.

I'm really glad I'm in land-locked Nebraska. We get an occasional quake here, but at least I never have to worry about tsunami's washing away my house. A flood maybe, or a tornado knocking it down, but never something scary like a tsunami.

Our local Tv channel is still doing constant coverage , in Oregon , the other west coast states also had a tsunami warning.
but only minor tidal changes reported so far.

We watched it for hours last night too.

One of the power plants in Japan that uses radioactive materials had to be shut down , but the pressure is rising  and they are telling those in the area to evacuate.

A nuclear power plant wasnt able to withstand the shake, and they cant cool off the reactors. They are evacuating several towns with an immenant melt down of the core. Dear God this is awful. There was a passenger train that got swept off the tracks and is completely missing. hundreds of passengers on it. Just horrible. My heart is broken for them.

I play my on line game with some japanese folks and my game is deserted of the Japan players today. its horrible. So many names that I know are just not there. I pray for their safety.

"nuclear power plant"

Thanks , I could not come up with the correct name for the power plant :o
Stayed up too late watching the news...

So tragic. I pray for the families in the path of this disaster. Dej, I hope you're able to get in contact with some of your online friends soon. I cannot imagine the terror those people must have felt. I can't watch the live coverage......just too much to process.

Erin524 03-11-2011 04:21 PM

there's also supposedly a passenger ship in japan that's missing. Couple hundred on board. I havent been able to find out if it's true or not.

They're reporting on Fox News that the waves that hit CA and OR were higher than the ones that hit HI this morning. That's scary. Apparently someone got washed out to sea in either CA or OR. Coast Guard is looking for him now.

[Authorities in Southern Oregon say a tsunami unleashed by the Japanese earthquake sank boats in Brookings-Harbor, swept half a dozen more out to sea and washed four people into the ocean.
The four, who had gone to the beach to watch the waves, all survived. Two got out on their own and the other two were rescued.]

[Crescent City, Calif. reported 8.1 feet, and Port San Luis reported 6.3 feet. In Oregon, Port Orford reported 6.1 feet.]

We now have a disaster trifecta.

Massive earthquake, check!

Epic tsunami caused by massive earthquake, check!

Nuclear power plant meltdown after being shaken around by massive earthquake and flooded by the epic tsunami, check! (they've confirmed the presence of cesium 137 and radioactive iodine outside of the reactor after the building exploded)

Now all we need is for Godzilla to show up and lay eggs in the wreckage of the nuclear power plant. (sorry, my gallows humor is showing, I just spent half the night on Twitter)

I am such a news junkie. Someone take my tv away from me please.
