balance

I was dx with PD 9 years ago and started having balance problems 2 years ago.I tried dance therapy and it worked while I danced but reverted back as soon as I stopped.I am 80 years old and my stamina is reduced,so bike therapy is not for me.My mds recomended physical therapy. If any of you has tried physical therapy would tell me if it was suiccessful. Also if any one has any other treatment for balance,I would be appreciative.

I just started ths last week and have no idea it it will work, but it *should* and it is cheap.

During a peak time when things are working as well as they are likely to, I take a paper towel, crumple it into a ball, and drop it onto the floor. Then I start playing soccer with it with maintaining control of the ball of the most importance (i.e. I don't kick it away).

Surprisingly, I find that there is a change of consciousness almost immediately and having the ball to focus on gives me smoother motion. I'm hoping that a few weeks of play will produce change.

Parkinsons UK have been sufficiently impressed with the experience of some PWP's that they are currently doing some research into the Wii which has a variety of activities for fitness. Balance is one of things that people have found improved in quite a short space of time.

aquatics

I take aqua-chi, aqua-aeroboics, and aqua-strength. aqua-chi is for balance and very relaxing while stretching your entire body and working on balance.

Very simple tai chi moves continue to help me. I stand on one foot and swing the other back and forth 12 times, then swing it in front of the other foot 12 times, then behind. Then I switch feet and do the same. I do this in grocery lines or any time I have to stand for a while. Of course, have something nearby to grab on to.
