diuretic called Mannitol...have you heard of this

I have bad inflammation problems that are getting worse by the day, and so far nothing that brings relief.

today i found a website and learned about this drug called Mannitol that is mostly used for brain swelling from trauma injuries. It is only given by IV form in a hospital or clinic. the dr that used this protocol was in florida and i think he has retired. here is his website http://www.rsdrx.com/mannitol.htm
he is referring patients to another doctor in florida. I was wondering if anyone else has used this drug or heard of any doctors using it. I am in Virginia about 2 hours from wash dc. also, a man that i spoke to today who lives in Mass. had this treatment years before the doctor retired, said that he would go to a clinic 3 days a week to get the Mannitol by IV for 1.5 hours...he would do this for 9 weeks...but he said it worked to remove his inflammation. Manntitol releases the inflammation in the cell which is different than the way Lasix works, which is in the vascular system.

Hope someone knows about this. I am waiting for my doctor to call me so i can ask him if he can find a way for me to try this.
thanks
Lori

Mannitol has been used for decades to reduce swelling around the eye or in the brain.

In my 40 years as an RN, I never used Mannitol as a diuretic, but I do know that it's sometimes used in Renal Units to force urine from the kidneys of patients in acute renal failure.

It has a long list of side effects, but as I don't know any more than that, I suggest you ask mrsD about it. I'm sure she'll be able to help you out.

I am sorry, I have never heard of using mannitol for abdominal swelling.

That would be a question for the doctor and a medical decision.
