Drugs with new "Black Box" Warnings for MG
My internist called me at home the other night (he's a great guy, but it's scary when he calls me and I can't think of any reason why he would!)
He just received in his office a "Black Box" warning for the following antibiotics for people with mg: Avelox, Cipro and Levaquin. Since i'm not a doctor, I asked him what a "Black Box" warning was and he explained it relates back to when all drugs were listed in the PDA and all doctors used it as the bible for prescribing drugs (of course, they use the computer now) If there was a warning they really wanted the doc to pay attention to, they placed it in a black box at the head of the drug description. In other words, it is a pretty severe warning. All 3 of these drugs can depress breathing which is not good for those of us with mg. I already had Levaquin listed as a drug I can't take, but when I was given it for UTI a couple of years ago, I ended up in ICU because my breathing tanked. Didn't have to be intubated, but had IVIG and used a bi-pap for several days. Just wanted to pass this warning along! Have a great day. |
Those drugs also cause nerve damage. Most of the time this damage is permanent. If you go to rxlist.com and view the warnings and precautions...you will be amazed what these drugs do to people!
