Hysterectomy?????
 

Hi all,

I want to get as many opinions ideas before I go and see a gynecologist. My problem is I have a cyst on my left ovary and am experiencing a huge amount of pain about a week after my period has finished, also major period pain and flooding. I've been to see my GP and had scans, which show up a cyst and possible endometrial deposits. She suggested that the only way to stop all that is going on may be a hysterectomy and removal of cyst.
Just wondering if anyone has had problems with a hysterectomy???
Any opinions ideas would be appreciated :)

I've had similar problems with cysts on my ovaries and the pain it causes. Sorry to hear you are suffering so much. Here's what my history is:

Cysts on my right and left ovary. Had R ovary operated on to remove cyst. Successful.

Cyst on my left ovary burst all by itself. No operation necessary.

My sister had ovarian/endometrial cancer stage 3. She had treatment and is a ten year survivor.

For the years following my sister's diagnosis I underwent endometrial biopsies every year since I was a huge candidate for getting cancer in this area.

In 2008 I underwent a hysterectomy with both ovaries removed. They found endometrial cells free floating in my abdomen and my right ovary strangled with endometrial cells.

Good thing, no more biopsies/everything fine. Bad thing, it took over 3 months to heal and almost a year to say I'm almost normal.

In what I gathered from your message the only reason you are having the hysterectomy is because of the cysts? If that is the case I'd hold off for a second opinion. This is a huge surgery. Don't let anyone tell you they were ready to go in 3 weeks. No one I know was fine in 3 weeks. If you have endometrial issues then that may be a different thing. Once you have your ovaries removed there are huge problems with hormones to deal with.

Partial Hysterectomy
 

I had a Partial Hysterectomy and I didnt have any problems from the surgery. And everything was okay for me afterwards too.

My mom had a hysterectomy over 25 years ago - she had uterine fibroids ALL over the outside of her uterus, ovaries, and even her appendix to the point that the Dr removed that too when he did the surgery. It did take her a long time to recover but she had been dealing with heavy bleeding and pain for most of her life and she swears that the moment she woke up from the surgery she felt like a new person. She had a wonderful Dr and a wonderful recovery.

Like the previous poster said, though, this is a MAJOR surgery and there may be other options that would be more suited to you if the pain is not completely taking over your life like my mother's was. If it's more than what you can handle, then it's completely up to you whether you want to go through with it. If you have your ovaries removed you will have to go on hormone replacement. My mom was on premarin (which she did GREAT on) until she found out that they take it from horse embryos...she stopped using it and everything else she's tried made her gain a lot of weight, she's also tried herbal supplements but when using those she still gets hot flashes, etc etc. Good luck with whatever you decide to do :)

I had a hyst, that ladys right, its a full six week recovery and if they take your ovaries you slam into menopause, not fun. I wish i never did it, I now have chronic pelvic and low back pain, they dont know why!
Look into other options.

I had a hysterectomy and o-rectomy, meaning EVERYTHING was removed, when I was 29. I am now 45! Yes, removing the ovaries puts you into menopause, but only if they do not put you on HRT the next day to prevent that from happening. I still take HRT so I will not go into menopause until the dr feels it is time for me to do so!

I had PCOS, back before they really knew anything about it. My ovaries were covered with cysts, I never ovulated and I had horrible pelvic pain that they could not get a handle on. WHEN I had my periods, they were extremely heavy, lasted a long time and were so painful. The hysterectomy was the best thing they could've done for me. Those parts didn't work properly, couldn't reproduce and hurt like crazy, they had to go!! That pain ended when those parts were removed :D
