Fructo Oligosaccharides ever heard of it?
I guess the newest trend in sugar free sweetners is Fructo Oligosaccharides or FOS for short.
Here is a bit of info from http://bodyecology.com/articles/understanding_fos.php its supposed to help cause the gut to produce the correct about of GOOD bacteria, the body cant digest it, and so it passes thru undigested... Why do I ask about this? lately whenever I am reading labels (i read everything) I keep finding that word. I decided to look it up. Since I dont buy prepackaged items, it facinated me that I found yet another sugar substitute. Anyone else eating this stuff? what are you thoughts? |
I have heard "fructose" is the least helpful sugar. If this stuff is made primarily from fructose, it might be harmful. I have reacted badly to all of the modern sugar substitutes.
I did OK on the old one, Saccharin, which was banned, and when they unbanned it I tried it, and I still was OK with it. It seems that in many areas of life, progress is really devolution. There is only a small number of calories in a modest dose of sugar: I have read 16 calories for a teaspoon of sugar. A teaspoon is enough to sweeten coffee or tea, or even cereal, if you like your cereal sugared. With my other disease, Porphyria, sugar is an antidote to an attack. I have had to get sugar down the hatch quick during attacks, but usually only a modest amount will help. |
Here is an article on inulin... very similar:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inulin The low carb pasta Dreamfield's has this added. And some yogurts, like Stoneyfield's organic. With our history in US of antibiotic overuse, I think FOS and inulin are helpful. Used in really high amounts however, may trigger fructose intolerant people. It doesn't seem to affect me negatively yet. Some pet food manufacturers are putting FOS into their pet foods too. http://www.rocketxl.com/iams/assets/prebiotics/ Our two cats who lived to 20 and 24, both thrived on Iam's Eukanuba. |
I have NOT tried this yet. the head ache that I get from equal, slenda, and aspertame are really bad, and I am gun shy. if I get the chance to try something with it, I will tell you what happens.
On first blush it sounds like a good idea. Made from soybean, or asparagus and high in fiber. your body wont digest it, and it causes your body to relases good bacteria in your gut, which can calm inflammation or relax the gut wall. Almost worth buying a box of those treats to see what happens. |
If your body will not digest the soybean, that would be fine. If your body digests the
soybean, it will be one of your worst triggers IF you have porphyria. Dejibo, we have discussed before the possibility that you have porphyria as well as MS. Perhaps you could read a list of foods to avoid if you have porphyria. One can be found on Porphyria@yahoogroups.com, in the files. I wrote an answer to a new member today which outlines the general triggers for porphyria, including the worst food triggers. But if you don't digest the soy, it's fine, although it might make you constipated, do you think? |
"they say" it helps promote better bowel elimination. Dont know. havent been brave enough to try it yet.
Will look into the porph stuff after vaca |
