I walked, really walked!
I walked for 10 minutes today. So excited. I hope this keeps going well.

Congrats! How far along are you in your pcs?

Thanks! - It will be 3 months next week.

Great!
That's great, freezer! How did your body/brain respond to the walk?
It has taken me a while to find the right amount of activity (ie, that keeps me moving but doesn't cause setbacks). For the last week or so I've been doing 10-min walks every other day. So far, so good. I'm now on week 6 of my recovery - my best week so far - and am hoping to start doing 15-min walks pretty soon. I've finally figured out that I need to progress *slowly* to keep my recovery sustainable (touch wood). A few times early on I tried walking every day and increased my walking time to 15, 20, 25 mins, but I think this was too much too fast. |

Surprisingly, I've been able to tolerate the walks just fine. I don't know if it's the elavil or me but I wasn't ready for this a few weeks ago. I'm tempted to try more time on my walks but I think I'm pretty close to pushing it to the limit and that's right where I need to be. Which is great becuase it leaves me feeling good and not dissapointed. I've also been doing a lot of yard work the last week or two, so I'm actually doing more physical work than just the walks but the yard work is a different animal entirely. It's a lot of stops and starts and some heavy lifting. I noticed that easing into that worked as well. At first I would just sit and mess with the ground near me, now I'm carrying wheel barrows of mulch to the back yard to spread, cutting branches, raking, etc. If I start feeling poorly I pack it up and go in. I haven't pushed myself just to get to the end of a project like I normally would. I leave things undone now if I have to and get back to it the next day. Yes, be careful and progress slowly. I still have some questions about this whole concussion thing but the slow progression approach seems to be working. Whatever it is that is working, I'm happy. Take good care! |
Many congratulations!! That's fantastic and I hope you continue to reap the benefits. I had read that exercise is thought to have positive effects on the symptoms of PCS so I began yoga. So far so good - at least we're all still trying!
