What has helped your headaches?

I am going into my 8th week of my second sports concussio. I got two concussion a little less then two months apart. Last week they were a little better and I was even able to go out to a together. Since yesterday Sunday they have been back in full force. Aleve, asprain, or tylonol does not give me much relief.

Sometimes it just pain or it may be pain and presure. Have any of you had luck with meds or anything. Let me know what you have tried and have they worked?

Of course, everyone is different. My doctor put me on Nortryptiline that i take at night (because it has sedating effects) and it takes care of my headache most of the day until about 5pm or 6pm and then i take Fiorinal for the headaches, which also works pretty well. The fiorinal has a aspirin, a mild muscle relaxer, and caffeine which is specific for headaches. Some people say to stay away from caffeine but i dont have any at all in my daily diet, so its just the one dose i take in the evening and it doesnt bother me much. Before the nortryptiline, i had headaches all day and they were awful. I feel like i have so much more control now with it. Hope this helps. Make sure you are working with a neurologist who specializes in concussions to understand how to treat these very specific headaches and symptoms. good luck!

Thanks for posting Xoe...

I have also had multiple impacts and seem to be suffering from headaches as well. Over the counter meds don't really help me much either.

I am going to a concussion clinic next week and help they will be able to help this debilitating symptom.

So far, using ice packs on my neck and forehead seem to provide some relief, as does making sure my neck is supported when I am sitting around.

Wishing you recovery and relief :)

Ice packs, ice packs, ice packs! Definitely.

Also, try to identify and avoid things that trigger headaches. For me, this includes: reading/writing, computer time, driving, watching TV, listening to music.

The only OTC med that seems to do anything for me is Aleve, but even that only brings the headaches down a notch.

I was on tramadol which was mildly more helpful but not much. My neurologist also said that it could affect visual convergence, which in my case exacerbates an existing problem and could actually contribute to headaches.

The most effective thing I've had so far was vicodin/norco. That would kill my headache when nothing else would. It works best if used kind of sparingly for worst case situations, though.

Good luck. Hope you get some relief soon.

nightnurse...what;s the difference between elavil and nortryptline? Why did your doc prescribe one over the other?

I am currently trying herbs, two actually: feverfew and butterbur. Much too soon for a conclusion, but the past couple months I did have significantly fewer headaches (migraines). I tried them separately and together, and I think they both may work, though not synergistically.

Normally have to take Imitrex. For treatment, of course. Need something that prevents it in the first place.
