Social Security

I will preface this to say I do not want this to end up political at all since the thread would be removed.

Does anyone feel our SSD checks are safe come next month?

Dejibo 07-24-2011 05:43 PM

I think they will be safe, but I think there will be a lot of threats on both sides of the fence as to what needs cutting, what needs raising, and what needs repairing. I dont think its the last time we will hear this type of threat either.

there. I wasnt political...whew! I was worried. :o

Social security is supposed to be funded till the 2030s sometime. (specific year, I'm not sure of...I'll have to find a link) I think it'll be fine. It's both sides of the political fence that are using the SS as a scare tactic to freak people out. (there, I think I was bipartisan in the mention of politics)

If both sides would just stop spending money, and stop printing money like rabbits breed, maybe they'd figure out how to get the budget budgeted and still pay the bills.

I think they'll be here. It's sad that they're using these scare tactics on the most vulnerable group of people. They ought to be ashamed.

I can't see that any political party OR individual politician wants to have the label of being at fault for holding hostage the frail and elderly. Can you imagine the backlash?

aussiemom 07-24-2011 08:11 PM

I think the checks will be here. I also think the PR about cutting SS benifits are going to happen, but it will apply to people in their 50s now, and our kids and grands. There is some talk of raising the full retirement age to 67. And the reduced payment age to 65.

thanks for the replys and keeping it nonpolitical

Im so glad folks are talking about this without name calling or bashing one side or the other! Thanks!

I agree that to be the one that pulls the plug on this program, even if for only one month would be suicide professionally. When we contribute money to do crazy things in other countries, and then turn and cut off our poor, our sick and our veterans. Yep, suicide.

I think the checks will come, and I think we wont get a deal in time for the debt ceiling to be raised. I pray that isnt the case because its going to mean massive chaos for us. The stock markets will slide, the housing prices which are already at rock bottom will slide, gas prices will spike, and it will take a great deal of doing to refoot ourselves.

Does anyone else agree that if you dont have the money to pay your own bills that its silly to give money out to pay other peoples bills? I balance MY budget first, then I am generous with my neighbors, but if my budget is out of whack, everyone else must sit still till we figure it out. Even if that means I personally do without my play money, my extras, and my brand name products.

as I understand it ... they are talking about changing the 'retirement' age to start receiving SS ... has nothing to do with those already 'in' the system .. it's just going to make those that would be eligible to start SS at age 62 to wait a bit longer ..

this is a hard 'row to hoe' ....

I'm being hopeful that we will receive our checks. I am on SSI though and that's a different type of SS. So, I don't know if that will make a difference.

I agree that I don't think any politician wants the fact that they voted to starve out the elderly and the sick. I also think they are smart enough to know that should the SS checks not go out, Medicare will fail as many of us will not be able to pay our premium and thus, we won't get health care. In addition, it will have a huge snowball effect. Many of us will not be able to pay rent and unfortunately will end up homeless, we will not be able to buy groceries, we will not be able to pay utilities, etc., etc. This in turn effects all those that we pay our bills to.

And it's not just those of us receiving SS that will not get paid, or so they say. It irritates me to think that our military who has served to help protect this country will now be penalized. I just can't fathom that, especially those that became disabled due to fighting in war. I just have a hard time believing that our politicians would do something like that.

I just think that this is just some sort of game and we (all those that they say are not getting paid) are the pawns. :( Very sad.

And, yes, Dej, I agree. If you don't have the money you look at all ways to cut costs. While the most vulnerable will be effected, the ancillary staff of our politicians will be flying around the country, staying at different hotels, eating expensive meals, etc. with the tax money we put in to it. How much could they save by cutting their expense accounts?
