Chia Seed Poisoning
Hi,
Found this website after googling chia seed poisonous effects. Wondering what's up with these Chis Seeds. Anyone else experience this? If so the public needs to know before a serious hospitalization or death occurs. Please be mindful when using this product. I bought the organic version from Wholefoods and have tried it three times. Today was my last day. The first two times (last two weeks), I became very ill, experienced severe explosive diarrhea for 2 days and muscle abdominal cramps that resemble labor pains and food poisoning. I thought that maybe I was using too much of the product for I was sprinkling it on cereal (not measuring it). Today, I added a smaller amount, 1 tsp. to my yoghurt and experienced severe vomiting and gagging within 3 hours of consumption, so severe that I experienced incontinence. I was too ill to drive from work. I FELT LIKE I HAD BEEN POISONED. I am a healthy, 55 year old. Good blood pressure, etc. and I do not take meds every day. I take an occasional NSAID for arthritis. |
Hi
I have not heard of any poisoning but did hear someone say their child developed neurological problems after having Chia seed tea ... I have never had chia seeds and after hearing her and your experience....I have no desire to try them! |
Chia seeds are very laxative for some people. I would not call it "poisoning" but just an intolerance.
Welcome to NT... I am brief because i am on a vacation with iffy connection right now. |
Was dfficult to find decent information about this product.
I did find this though. Quote:
note: it is a Salvia |
Hey there, Evette. Welcome!
:o So sorry to hear about your horrible experience! WoW! & those li'l Chia Pets are sooo cute.
But chia is in the Salvia family, which contains psychoactive plants. It's vaguely possible that the organic line you got was a variant strain that has a greater sensitivity for more people than standard chias grown commercially & non-organically. Sometimes those bad chemicals kill things, too, that we don't tolerate any better than the plant does. "Organic" can have a down side. More likely, you are just one of those sensitive to the known side effects of chia. They're well detailed & explained at WebMD.com; here's the link to the page: http://www.webmd.com/vitamins-supple...dientName=CHIA You might be able to tolerate a smaller amount of chia, but you would have had to completely detoxify your system of it before taking more. It probably takes more than a week to clear the body, so by taking it subsequent weeks you just increased your toxicity level. Does this make sense to you? Yeah, bottom line...you were more or less poisoned. But it's complicated. Another person doing the exact same thing could have very different results. I sure hope you're fully recovered by now. This is a good warning for the rest of us who might try chia. All these herbal things have some side effects, & they really aren't talked about enough until something like this happens. You've no doubt saved a few people pain and/or embarrassment. Take good care. |
