eye alignment / strabismus
 

hey all, after my concussion hard impact to the chin) i noticed that my eyes were pointed outwards. over the 7 weeks since it's gotten slightly better but is not back to normal. has anyone else experienced this? is this likely a cause of optic nerve damage, cranial nerve damage, or cerebral damage? will it get better by itself or do i need medical attention? thank you very much!

I just completed ten weeks of vision therapy because I was having trouble with my binocular vision, even though I didn't perceive that I was having difficulties. It has helped me a lot and reduced my headaches due to eye strain, reading, and computer work.

i had double vision
 

After my concussion I had terrible double vision, partial vision loss, dyslexia. I was hit right above the visual cortex. Many of the vision issues gradually got better over the first two to three months afterward. The double vision did not get better. My eyes were off by 40+ degrees, and one was also looking slightly down. That was due the cranial nerve 6 being damaged where it passes through the hole in my skull going out to the face.

The emergency room did nothing to discuss or offer advice regarding the vision issues even though I mentioned them frequently. About a week after the injury we called a big ophthalmology practice to ask their advice. They had me come in right away and see their neuro-ophthalmologist. He also had me see a neurologist the next day to fully assess the concussion. They redid the MRI and CT, which were fine. Over the next year I saw the neuro-opth four or five times. He closely checked to see what improvements there were. After a year with only a 3 degree improvement he recommended surgery. He said that many times it will heal on it's own, but if it hasn't corrected itself within the first year, the chances of it correcting later are very, very slim. I then saw an ophthalmology surgeon. I ended up having surgery on the muscles of both eyes to realign the eyes. The surgery was 16 months after the injury. It worked perfectly! My vision was perfect as soon as I woke up.

Hi Wink. After 7 months of my right eye stuck in the right hand corner of my socket, they neuro-optho told me yesterday that I will have to have strabismus surgery to attempt to correct the eye, or at least get it more toward the center of the socket. I am very happy to read that your surgery went perfectly and will hold onto that hope myself, even though articles I have read and the doctor also told me that it is about 60% effective. I did not have any injuries - they have run 4 MRIs and EMG and MRA and countless blood tests and nothing shows any signs of cancer, tumor, MS or MG etc. I have been on prednisone for 4 weeks now and my eye has not moved so will be tapering off that now. SO: no reason for my eye to be doing this - they can't treat it - and they say that if my eye was going to correct itself, it would have done so by now. I guess that is where things stand - just want to thank you for giving me some kind of hope that the surgery will help. Tim
