Exciting Life

In March I had an EMG done in Hong Kong. The results showed damage to motor nerves. The Neurologist said I definitely had Peripheral Neuropathy. In August I saw a new Neurologist in Australia who seems far more competent than any of the ones I have been seeing in Hong Kong. She insisted upon another EMG done by someone she trusts as the results are very much "operator dependent".

Result. No nerve damage.
Dx. Not Peripheral Neuropathy.

Me What is it?
She Don't know.

Result more tests are being done

EMG/Nerve conduction studies results--

--are not only highly operator-dependent (they can vary considerably based on skill in placing the electrodes and needles, the temperature in the room and in the body being tested, etc.) but they can, of course, change over time, either due to worsening OR due to healing/re-enervation.

Still, a "normal" EMG/nerve conduction study does not rule out neuropathy. The damage may be patchy or changing, and such studies say nothing about dysfunction of the smaller, thinly myelinated or unmyelinated nerves, which are too thin to be measured by such studies.
