Choking on post sinus drip, What Allergy Meds?
..O.K., I have the feeding tube to eat and not choke, But now my sinuses are acting up this weekend and I keep choking on it, its so scary. I can finnally swallow my salava BUT the added sinus drip is completelty wearing me out by me trying not to keep choking to death
Can M.G. patients take any kind of allergy meds. Maybe a non sleeping kind? |
Hi Granny,
Not knowing what kind of meds you are on currently, I would suggest talking to doc's office to see if they have a recommendation. Sometimes over-the-counter medicines are fine - but they must always be taken in consideration with ALL other medications that a person is taking. I hope you find some relief soon. |
Anthistamine a problem for M.G. patients ?
Hi SueV,
My Doctor said I could take Claritin but I am questioning that because on the Claritin site it said it contains anthistamine 5 mg. I thought that drug was a problem for M.G. patients. Would it make my swallowing worse? Thanks for any help you can offer me. |
Hi, GrannyJo. I doubt any of us feel comfortable giving specific medical advice, especially for someone with obvious choking issues. I wouldn't want you to get any worse. Do you have a neurologist you can talk to?
My first thought was maybe you have an infection from the feeding tube. Then I wondered if something you are being fed could be causing an allergy. Or do you have seasonal allergies? Children's liquid Claritin can be titrated so that you can try a very small dose, like even 1/4 of a teaspoon. But, again, you really need to talk to your doctor(s) about all of this. http://www.claritin.com/claritin/en/...oredSyrup.jspa Mucinex might help too but, again, you need to see if that is good for you or not. Both an antihistamine and Mucinex can dry you out and you need to have a good flow of fluid, especially with a feeding tube. Antihistamines do the opposite of what Mestinon does, so it might make your MG worse. I can handle a small amount of liquid Benadryl but that's me. Everyone responds to drugs differently. You can try a cold air humidifier too. Or steam from boiled water (to breathe in). Again, there are a lot of tips doctors "should" be giving you! My best advice is to go in and have a conversation with your primary doctor. Ask them to keep your neuro in the loop by sending over any notes. And who did your feeding tube? How long have you had it? There's a lot to think about and it's best to have doctors help you with all of this. I hope you find some relief soon! Annie |
