MRI worries

After over a year and half I am finally having an MRI in the morning.

I am a little nervous about the loud noice. Plus I'm not sure how I feel about what I want the results to be. My OT said that it might not show anything because it cant show micro tearing.

On one hand if it does show up than it will be justification for all that has happened. But it also shows that I am brain damaged. My OT reminded me that we already know I have brain damage.

Either way it won't change anything.

Here's a recent thread with some useful info on MRI scans. I was apprehensive about getting a head MRI, but was glad I got it done. It probably took 25 mins. The most useful tips for me were: bring good earplugs; close your eyes before they insert you into the machine; and have a game plan for staying calm (eg, focus on your breathing, think constructive thoughts).

I have done several MRIs with and without contrast. If it is with contrast it takes longer time. As greenfrog said use earplugs and for sure close your eyes and don't open until it is done.

If possible try to find a open bore MRI (NOT OPEN MRI). Open bore has both sides open. If you find 3T magnet it is even better.

Like you already know, the MRI will probably not show anything because our injuries normally are too microscopic to see on an MRI....however, its a good tool to rule out any further serious damage. Its more about eliminating the possibility of your injury being more severe. Dont be discouraged if its negative....like you said...you already know you are brain injured and your symptoms tell your doctors that as opposed to an MRI. The MRI will have earplugs available for you (but bring your own if you feel more comfortable with that). THey also provide you with earphones with music of your choice in a lot of them. The noise is definetly loud, but try and stay calm and still. I had mine 2 days after my accident and i already had sirens going off in my ears and 10/10 headache....it was awful and very painful...but the peace of mind knowing i didnt have a bleed was definetly worth the stress of the test. Good luck!
