Hit Head Again...
 

Greetings, I am new to the forum. Little over three months ago I hit the top of my head in a car crash; no fainting and a spell of dizziness that appeared after a n hour or so. I've had headaches off and on since then and have had a CT Scan done and an MRI done both of which revealed nothing.

Yesterday however while I was getting up while my bus came to a stop and I hit the top of my head (again) on the steel handles.

Being a paranoid (I'm talking extremely) I was just wondering whether or not that could result in second impact syndrome. If not I was just wondering what in Good God's name it could be and if you could lend me your wisdom.

Very sorry to hear about your initial & recent hit.

What I lack in depth of a response I hope to make up in quickness after your post and concern.

Lord willing, your symptoms are not horrible at this point- pain level?

Personally when I bump the head- since my TBI a year ago, the pain lasts at least a week, sometimes a few- eventually fading.

The severity of the hit & your existing condition may determine. Not sure if you have a doctor/specialist.

Second impact syndrome is a condition where the brain has lost its ability to regulate blood flow and blood pressure in the brain. This can lead to an increase in intra-cranial pressure to the point that serious damage and even death can occur.

It is usually a risk during the first few weeks after the concussion. If you are at risk, you would develop symptoms within a short period of time.

The other risk is quite different. Multiple Impact Syndrome is where the brain sustains more damage from the second impact or equal or lesser intensity. An easy example, First impact of 5, injury of 5. Second impact of 5 or less with injury or symptoms of 10. And so on.

MIS can result in longer lasting or even permanent symptoms.

On a different note, I suggest you get some evaluation of your neck, especially you upper neck. A vertical impact to the top of the head can cause injury to the neck that will cause symptoms that mimic or overlap PCS.

If you can treat any neck issues, your PCS symptoms may be much less.

Thank you both; Jeffrey, my pain is bearable thankfully. A slight twinge of pain here and there but I think it's amplified by my paranoia. I saw two specialists right after my car accidents and both gave me a clear bill of health.

I am more concerned about the second hit.

Mark in Idaho if possible could you clarify on what you mean by short time. It's been little over two and a half days. So am I out of the clear for SIS? My GP recommended a chiropractor; I plan to utilize that option quite soon.

i think second impact syndrome is something that starts immediately after you get hit the second time. it makes your brain swell up so you would know if you have it. your not out of risk of getting it after another hit though until your symptoms go away, thats what iv been told
