Animal deaths spark major pet food recall
By Associated Press
Sunday, March 18, 2007

UNION, N.J. - Pet owners were worried yesterday that the pet food in their cupboard may be deadly after millions of containers of dog and cat food sold at major retailers across North America were recalled.

Menu Foods said yesterday it was recalling dog food sold under 48 brands and cat food sold under 40 brands including Iams, Nutro and Eukanuba. The food was distributed throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico by retailers such as Wal-Mart, Kroger and Safeway.

An unknown number of cats and dogs had suffered kidney failure and about 10 died after eating the affected food, the company said.

Many stores yesterday frantically pulled packages of the recalled “cuts and gravy” style food, sold from Dec. 3 to March 6.
The company makes pet food for 17 of the top 20 North American retailers. It is also a contract manufacturer for companies including Procter & Gamble Co.

A complete recall list is available at www.menufoods.com/recall

thanks for posting this,,,,I looked frantically for our cats cat food...he is eating a special kidney diet from Hills prescription diet.
I guess contaminated food affects humans all the time...so sooner or later it is now affecting our cats and dogs too. remember the spinach not that long ago....
thankfully ours was not on the list.

pigs and chicken now

Greetings,
Farmers are feedings this toxin to pigs and chickens now?!!!!
I'm disgusted. Tonight I bought tofu for hubby to cook with some organic chicken we had in the freezer.
I wish that I could feel good about our food supply and I wish I could feel that our gov (HA!) protects us.

A friend of mine told me that Talapia (the fish) is generally safe. He grows them to sell and knows about the industry. I'll buy talapia next time -- already tired of tofu.

Trying to feel good about things in our world.

WASHINGTON - The Food and Drug Adminstration said Tuesday that as many as 3 million chickens that may have been given contaminated feed containing melamine have already been eaten by consumers, according to NBC News.

Although the chickens, which came from 38 poultry farms in Indiana, have already made their way into the food supply, there appears to be minimal or no health risk to humans, the government said.

Joint News Release: FDA and USDA Determine Swine Fed Adulterated Product

USDA to Compensate for Depopulation

The USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) today notified State authorities that swine fed adulterated product will not be approved to enter the food supply.

Based on information currently available, FDA and USDA believe the likelihood of illness after eating pork from swine fed the adulterated product would be very low; however, the agencies believe it is prudent to take this measure.

FDA determined that a shipment of rice protein imported from China was contaminated with melamine and melamine-related compounds.

Basically was was being put in to the pet food was pool cleaner and other chemicals! Unfortunately the FDA is so understaffed, it is almost impossible to track properly if these chemicals have made it into our food supply.
Bill Maher talked about this on his show Friday night. The man is a strict vegitarian and he is worried about the chemicals in the veggies and fruits too. So regardless if you are vegan or not, you are screwed! Figures huh?

Hi,
I haven't seen Bill Maher in a while. I used to love to watch his show.

Melamine is also in plastic dishware.
