SSI question
 

Hi everyone. This is my first post. I have received SSI since Sept 2006. I had to move out of the home with my husband to receive it. Even though we have not lived as husband and wife for several years I could not receive it without moving out. I have no health insurance and maxed out all credit cards (owe $55,000) for medical care. So I had no choice but move out to qualify for medicaid. My question is - if I get a divorce would I be able to move into the home again since we both own it to help save money. Does any one know or where I can find out. Thank you. nickey58

To get answers on social security issues, I remember getting help directly from the soc sec office. The one in the town I was living in, had a very busy phone and it was hard to get through, so I frequently called a soc sec office in another city and got answers from them. If you did this, I think you could protect your identity, if you feel a need to do that.

The national social security hotline. I've always had great luck with this number. Wait time is typically about 10 min., longer on mondays, or near the beginning of the month. But, they can answer all questions. However, they will ask for your info. Possibly, you could just ask the question without them asking for your info. Every time I have called, I have needed something directly related to my benefits, so they had to look me up. I do think you could ask the question without giving your info. though. You should try it. The number is 1-800-772-1213. Hope I helped some.

Nickey, this is a topic I would not bring up with Social Security. I would speak only to a private entity such as a lawyer.

SSi is a form of welfare, so you will have to report any income and expenses you have. They figure how much for rent, utilities, food etc. If your husband or ex husband pays all the bills, then why should they give you SSI? How much of the mortgage are you to pay, utilities, etc, that's how they will figure what you will get, its very confusing. Go to your social security office if its close or call if you have patience and tell them what you want to do and ask them what is going to happen if I pay this much towards bills and I live with someone.
In Florida they are constantly checking bank accounts to see how you spend and whether any extra money is coming in. Living with a spouse or a roommate may deduct what you receive. Losing medicaid would be huge problem and with all your credit card debt I would be concerned with judgements, some states let creditors put liens on your house. Good luck to you.

What happens when a baby is born into the home of a person who recieves SSI? ((They aren't the home owner, though?) It is important I find this out now.)

When my adult daughter lived in our home there was a challange test. I provided all the houshold expenses, it was divided by the number of persons in the house to what their portion of houshold cost were, for example, our familys was $270 a month each. They used that figure to calculate her SSI.

There were months that she did not pay it,before receiving the SSD and SSI, the caseworker that called for me to fill it in told me when the money came to reimburse myself as they expected it in the calculations for me to get that portion.....It was a thousand or two maybe....

I would get the advice of an attorney to best protect yourself...and to ask if bankrumptcy is an option....also when divorcing is there a portion of medical bills the husband, would be required to cover.....
