Dental bone graft

In July I had an infected cracked bottom back tooth and my dentist pulled my tooth and suggested I get a bone graft. He used Human bone and now it is September and I have bone growing out of the side of my gum and it is painful. Is this normal?

Hi Diva,

Chances are you have what is called a "bony fragment" or "sliver" of bone that was broken off during the extraction. These little pieces of bone move up to the surface as the wound is healing. Since it is painful, you should see your dentist to evaluate it. Sometimes these pieces need to be removed or they will cause an infection. Usually the piece is very little and it is removed easily.

This is something that should be checked and not put off.

Let us know how you're doing.
