ALC for spinal cord injuries
UK Spinal Cord and Brain Injury Research Center (SCoBIRC) -- have discovered that in experimental models, severe spinal cord injury can be treated effectively by administering the supplement acetyl-L-carnitine or ALC, a derivative of essential amino acids that can generate metabolic energy, soon after injury.

This is interesting.
IAMs is putting this in their premium dry foods for cats now. Thanks for posting that article! |
Yes, I found it interesting also. Makes me wonder where else and if this would have application in other types of injuries/surgeries. ALC is one of the key nutrients for toxic induced PN.

ACL is being touted and advertised to baby boomers to retard aging. Juvenon supplement contains it.
Their website is full of interesting studies and suggestions about it...you might like it Marlene: http://juvenon.com/ http://juvenon.com/labels/label_Juvenon.html It was developed by biochemist Bruce Ames, PhD. |
Thanks for the link. I will explore it further.
About 4 years ago I put John on this from Life Extension for Mitochondrial support. His strength was so poor he couldn't the sweep the front walk without stopping to take a break at least four or five times. So I figured his muscles were not converting the energy. Well, when spring came around and we were back out doing yard work, he was able to sweep the entire walk and driveway without stopping. I new it had ALC but the main one they were pushing for this was the carnosine. He takes two of these a day which is about 1200 mg of ALC. It's pretty pricey but well worth it for him. I've taken it but must do it in the morning because I have found it can keep me awake if I take it too late. http://www.lef.org/Vitamins-Suppleme...y=mitochondria |
I've just restarted my SAMe... since my right knee is acting up again.
I stopped it after 10 yrs, thinking I was home free. I needed the $$ for the d-chirol inositol I was trying, anyway. The bottom line? I lost tons of stamina, so went back on SAMe when I returned from vacation. 400mg in the morning. My stamina is returning and I can walk farther with less fatigue, and don't need naps as much either. I also take 250mg of ALCar and 100mg R-lipoic acid. And 150mg of Theanine. The carnitine is very useful for many people, I agree. |
