It appears that my son has TOS. He apparently overused his arms lifting weights and playing piano and is suffering from arm/elbow pain and tingling in his fingers. I am not sure who he should see first, a neurologist, orthopedic specialist, or vascular specialist. I want to make sure that he is seen by the best TOS person available who can direct his care. And if physical therapy or other modes of treatment are indicated, I would appreciate recommendations. I have read some things about the use of ultrasound and MRNeurography and would like to determine how useful these are in diagnosing and treating TOS.
Thank you. |
Not sure about distances for you , but Joyce N. Wilkinson, PT, OCS has been mentioned highly in the past.
Pogson Physical Therapy 2664 29th Street Santa Monica, California 90405 http://www.pogsonphysicaltherapy.com/contactinfo.html If nothing else she could be a good one for Dr references also or other PTs closer to you. Here's list of testing & ideas a member put together- they all may not apply in your son's case but it's a good list - pick & choose what might be best for him. With a good TOS drs recommendations also. http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/sh...ht=TOS+testing Has he had basic work ups already - x rays & MRIs?? these really should be done first just to rule out any obvious spinal issues or anomalies. Comprehensive blood work up - thyroid?? etc. I would avoid surgeons unless something shows up that indicates a surgical intervention. I'm trying to recall the CA TOS doc names... Here's a link - not sure how up to date it is- http://www.tosinfo.com/links/hcp/hcp.html#nonsurgeon also for good info RSI & TOS - http://www.selfcare4rsi.com/rsi-articles.html http://www.doctorellis.com/treatment.html other things to look into could be trigger points- http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/thread125577.html Posture -forward head/forward shoulders? so much info is in our useful sticky threads - http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/thread84.html |
If he hasn't already, he needs to drop the weightlifting until he gets this figured out.

Vman - I'm seeing Dr. Hugh Gelabert at UCLA. He's a vascular surgeon, very nice, thorough and explains things well, answers all questions, and allows time for the appt so as to not feel rushed. We are keeping things conservative right now as far as my treatment. I highly recommend him; however, you have to have a referral from another doctor before seeing him. I was referred by a orthopedic back/neck doc.
I would agree that your son should drop the weightlifting for now. As for piano and other activities, if it's possible, have somebody evaluate him as far as hand/arm positioning etc. I'm taking Alexander Technique lessons to try to break some of my bad habits (conscious and subconscious). You might want to investigate it for your son. Lastly, proper breathing and becoming aware of the body (head position, subconscious tension, etc) as I'm learning, are a big part of controlling the symptoms and feeling better. I'm new to TOS as well but these are just a few things that have helped me. Good luck! Keep us posted on your sons progress. |
