I have a concern (women stuff)

I have a concern. I suspect I might be pregnant.:D I will know for sure if I do not see my friend on the 12th of this month. I am on Lamictal 200 mg. I found out that Lamictal is in Category C listings. So that made me feel a little better but the risks are still upsetting. I am on a low dose below 500mg so supposedly i am at low risk according to my research. If you all know more or care to share some info with me feel free.

Has anyone ever used lamictal during and after pregnancy? If so how did it go?

Other than that I have health insurance now, I am going to go see a doctor on my day off and make sure I notify my tdoc and pdoc. I hope things are going to be alright. I am a little scared but also excited:D! I just hope my medicine doesn't do any harm is all.

Hey there !!!

First of all, CONGRATULATIONS on the baby !!! aw... I love pregnancy, babies, and stuff... maybe someday I... anyway,

I found this article which might help you: http://www.bipolairplatform.com/file...iatry_2007.pdf

Also, I was reading Lamictal can cause problems of the lip, palate or both in 9 of 1000 babies of mothers taking lamictal...

Basically, level C means there might be more benefits of the med than risks... but still...

I have no idea but I'm a woman too so I share your concern. I'm sending positive thoughts, many prayers, & hope you'll keep us up on what you learn. :circlelove:

Thank you so much! I read it and it is pretty much what I read in the other articles I have read. Which confirms that they are sources I can trust. I think I am going to be fine. I actually read experiences on the medicine of other pregnant women and their babies seem to be very healthy. I think I should alright I am at low risk. But we will see on the 12th if i am or not. Body is sending some funny signals. :p

Dear Sharla,
It is great to hear from you. Congrats on the possible baby!! :grouphug:

Call your pdoc and tdoc on Monday and let them know. You will also need to get an ob/gyn who can work closely with the pdoc.

Don't worry about doing your own research. The pdoc and ob/gyn will want to give you recommendations based on their training and experience.

For now, keep taking the Lamictal until one of them tells you to start tapering. We can't abruptly stop it.

Some woman who are already stable get by with minimum (or no) medications during their nine months. Then the doctors then put them back on medications a few hours after they give birth.

Good luck. Ask your doctors lots of questions.

Dear Sharla

Congratulations(????)... you'll have to let us know if the baby is confirmed!

Call your pdoc and obgyn asap - do not wait for test confirmation!

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18448870

the first trimester seems to be where the (albeit small) increased risk of lip and palate deformities arise. if you are stable, you may want to discuss lowering or suspending lamictal and resuming it later - that's for you and your docs to decide. Depending how far along you are (sometimes there is a "false" period after the first month so... you may be 6 weeks or more) they may say it makes no sense for you to alter your medication.

Anyway, see what they say. It should be possible to sign releases to permit them to discuss your case directly, for maximum clarity between them, and maximum benefit to you.

the other thing is that lamictal is associated with folate deficiency which is a common cause of deformities. one think you could do right away is start supplemening with folate - 400 mg a day. do not exceed 1000 mg without doctor's advice. since folate processing requires other b vitamins, i'd recommend a balanced b complex, or even better - ask your obgyn. She can prescribe supplements specifically indicated for gestation and additional folic acid if need be.

Good to see you and hope to hear back soon!

Mari- Thank you for the helpful advice. I am going to look around for a doctor and Monday I am calling the Tdoc right away. The pdoc I am having issues with because he is a bit arrogant. So I am in the middle of making a switch to another pdoc who helped me before when the other was not available. I like this pdoc better than my current pdoc. My current Pdoc is a poor record keeper, harshly ask me why I have a certain amount of pills because of this and made me feel like i was abusing my medication. He made me sound like I was a prescription drug addict. and almost refused me my full refill. So I had to argue with him and push him to give me my 30 day refill. He said I should already have enough according to "his record" and I said I am willing to show him my pill bottles to confirm that I do not. So after all that he gave me the correct prescription. So I told my tdoc what happened and she was not happy and asked if i would like to switch and I said yes. So I will let them both know. And they will use the best judgements. I trust them because I have never progressed so quickly in treatment and therapy like this before.
I will be sure to ask many questions :)

Bizi- I promise to keep in touch! Insurance is a plus indeed I was waiting on the insurance so I can get my yearly physical but I guess I have to get everything done now hahahaha. We will see what happens!

Waves- I am already taking the prenatal vitamins! I love them! they are pink!:D I think I like them better than my basic multi vitamin. I read about the folic acid. I will see what the doc says about how much he or she would like me to have.
It is sooo weird.7 days later after activity, I took the test, the test was a negative. Then I thought I started, and it turned out to be a false period for sure. I am suppose to start on the 12th. And it is tooooooo light to be a real period. ( sorry for the gross details ) So I am testing on the 12th to confirm.calling around for doctors just in case. i will try eating foods with some folic acid as well. Just to help :)

Thank you everyone for your support and helpful information!
