OT -- I took my 'baby' Lilo to the Vet this morning
 

I brought Lilo in to my Vet to have my baby spayed. I brought her in at eight, and she will be staying overnight. I didn't anticipate any problems, as I have had many animals spayed, and some neutered, in the past.

The house is quiet and I miss her already :( .

Then, about an hour ago, I received a call from the Vet. All of her pre-anesthesia testing went well, but Lilo had vomited twice since she has been there, and they found pieces of a green plastic mixed in with the bile. The Vet wondered if I knew what she had eaten. I looked around my bedroom and found a green, latex fish, one of her toys. Problem was, the back end was missing :eek:. I had seen her chewing on this toy days ago, but what she normally does is spit the pieces out (just like she does when she rips the cover off of a tennis ball - I fiind pieces everywhere!).

Long story short, she is still going to have the surgery, but the Vet said she is going to make the incision longer than usual so that she can check her stomach to make sure she isn't full of little green latex pieces :p.

Now, I am a bit more concerned than usual about my baby. The Vet said she will call me when the surgery is over and let me know how things went.
I will keep you posted. Please say a little prayer for my girl.

I suggest you ask for an estimate....

Surgery I have discovered for my own cat just this week for cutting into the intestine to remove a tumor was going to be $3600-5000..... $60 a minute! + all the other costs of anesthesia, etc.

So do call back and ask what to expect cost wise.

I am sorry your beloved pet is sick... we have been thru a nightmare with this cancer thing for our cat Oreo. Testing alone so far has been $2000! So I cancelled the surgery, and we are letting her enjoy the last few months without more pain and anguish. So far she seems normal in fact. It will be euthanasia for us very soon (2nd opinion vet said 2 months without and 5 months with surgery).

mrsD's right, check back with vet. What if there's latex in the stomach? Stomach surgery? Lots more money, more surgical stress, more time under anesthesia?

I received an estimate for the surgery in writing before I left her this morning, so I'm not too worried about the cost.

Now the good news!! The Vet called a little while ago. Lilo was just waking up from surgery, was doing well and was on pain meds. The Vet told me that poor Lilo threw up two more times before being put under, but by the fourth time, it was just bile. She also said that she simply made the incision a bit longer than usual, and looked around while she was in there, and there was no more latex anywhere in her stomach or intestines. The surgery went well, and I will be able to pick her up tomorrow afternoon. She will be sent home with some pain meds (she also had to have a few baby teeth removed). I will need to feed her soft foods for a few days due to her mouth being sore.

IMO alot of animals throw up from the anesthetic. This is why you need to fast them, before surgery.

Keep this in mind.... Your estimate was only for a spay. If they had to open her stomach or intestines, that would be EXTRA...
Vets today have major hidden costs. Typically a gastrectomy (opening the stomach) or an intestinal resection... cutting the bowel and removing something and stitching it back up... starts at $3000! (or more) depending on the length of time it takes, at $60 a minute.

Doody on Pets, had dental floss removed from her cat's intestines not too long ago... $3000.

If your dog swallows junk, chews toys too much, watch like a hawk. Because it could turn into a nightmare for you and the poor critter!

I am so glad it turned out well. Not all of these situations do.

I believe lilo vomited before time. So it was different.

Yes, Donna, you're right. She threw up before surgery. Could have been nerves or maybe the latex in her tummy started to become an issue. Either way, I will certainly will watch her more closely when she is chewing on her toys!

Going to bed now. It's going to be weird without Lilo in bed with us. She's slept in my bed from the first night :o.
