Vista & Non-Msoft Pgms !?!
I don't know if its true for a lot of other pgms, but I'm royally
PO'd about one in particular. It won't work with Vista. OK for OS's up to XP, ..... but not Vista. Gotta buy the new and improved upgrade (only $150.00, if you please) and then go to the website of the pgm & Dl an additonal upgrade and a service pack. Then it'll work with Vista. (supposedly, but I've heard there are 'bugs' in it and it may, or may not) My son's a quad. He bought a new laptop and it came with (what else?) Vista. All the new hardware comes with Vista! So he wants to be able to use the laptop with voice commands because his hands won't work too well. So he asks me to buy Dragon Naturally Speaking 8 (because the newest - 9.0 - is too pricey for his limited disability budget and he figures that the older version is all he'll need, anyway). So he buys DNS 8 and a mike for the laptop. The only version that'll work with Vista, is DNS 9.5. DNS 9 is the highest that can be bought. Ya gotta go to the website & DL SP1 & upgrade to 9.5! Whazzup? Is it Vista that's not compatible with anything that exists that's not Msoft? Or is it the pgm company that's causing the rip-off? BTW- someone told me that Vista comes with a voice recogniton pgm. Anybody got any info on that? |
Deja-vu
I've got a copy of Vista sitting in the box because I can't use it unless I get new "everything" almost. I've decided I'd rather buy a mac. I found some information about it just now, but have no idea if it eliminates the need for any hand movements on keyboard or mouse. In a couple of pages it mentions "reduce" hand movements. Doesn't say eliminate them but I only just skimmed the info..
Hopefully someone else will know more about it or have actual experience using it. I don't. e.g. "It was designed for people who want to significantly limit their use of the mouse and keyboard while maintaining or increasing their overall productivity." Lara,
Thanks for the link to the reference guide and step-by-step set-up, for the Vista speech recognition pgm. |
Vista has a voice program but I've never used it so I don't have any hands-on info for you.
Vista *is* the problem. The best thing your son can do is demand that they give him XP instead. I'm a beta tester for MS and am currently running Vista, RC1 upgrade 2. My version, from what I've seen and read, runs better than the final release version and that's not saying much. Vista is a major resource hog, a lot of the drivers don't work properly if at all. Most of the programs that ran on XP will not run on Vista. Although, you might try installing DNS under compatibility mode and running it that way. I've never really gotten the compatibility mode to work properly in my version of Vista. My advice to anyone considering Vista: Not at this point. Wait. Either they'll fix it or it'll bomb. At this time it appears to be bombing. Not just with the general public either but even big corporations are avoiding Vista like the plague. |
