SSDI benefits

I just received a call today telling me that my application for disability was approved. I applied August 1st so I was really surprised and relieved. The lady that called set up an appointment with my husband to come in and file for benefits for my children. I am not sure why they receive benefits. Can someone explain this and also tell me approx. how much they receive. My kids are 1 and 3 so do I just put it in a college fund for them? If it helps my Social security statement says the following:

Disability
If I become Disabled right now my payment would be about $1254

Survives:
My Child $963
My spouse caring for my child $963
Total family benefits can not be more than $2336

Any explanation will help. My children are not disabled so I am not sure what this means.

Thanks!

There can be an offset if you receive WC benefits.

"How much can family members get?
Each family member may be eligible for a monthly benefit that is up to half of your retirement or disability benefit amount. However, there is a limit to the total amount of money that can be paid to you and your family. The limit varies, but is generally equal to about 150 to 180 percent of your retirement or disability benefit."

You and your husband should ask the person you have the appointment with as well as all other questions you may have. Write down a list of questions to ask prior to going to the appointment.

It's best to get the correct answers directly from the horses mouth. ;)

Good luck!

kelley,i think you might have set a new record for being awarded ssdi benefits in the shortest time.in only a few short month's since applying you were awarded benefits???that is really amazing when you consider that there are people on this forum who have been waiting years with many denials and appeals trying to win benefits.congrats and consider your self to be very lucky....

I was really surprised also. Especially after they spoke with my husband on the phone about my problems. He is not the best with communication :)

SS will send you a booklet on what you can spend the money towards for the children, (it sounds like you'll receive about an extra $1000 per month) but it doesn't have to just be put away for college, although if you can afford to save a portion for them, that'll be great!
