The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency

Book/TV

The No.1 Ladies Detective Agency has been turned into a TV series. I saw some ads for it but didn't realize it was the same name as the books that I recall being recommended so long ago on our Book thread in another forum here. I just went searching in case I had the incorrect title, but it's the same. Darn, wish I'd watched it all from the beginning. I've still not read the books.

Oh, I've read all the books. Haven't seen the show yet.

I like McCall-Smith's gentle style in this series.

I thought here it was only on the premium cable channels (HBO or showtime?), which we don't have. Maybe the library will have though!

Thanks for the reminder.

;) It was you who recommended the books long, long ago.

It's on ABC TV here (Aust. Broadcasting Corporation). Also on DVD I suspect.

I had a look at the new series last week but I don't think I even got half way through before I turned it off. I enjoy mysteries and crime shows, but I couldn't get into this one I'm afraid.

Thanks, Koala. Books don't often translate well into television series I've found. The ABC keeps each episode online viewable for 2 weeks. Not sure what week they're up to now, (think it's 5 or 6, not sure) but I will take a look at one episode and get a feel for it that way.

I wonder if the TV series is very different in some way.

I do seem to recall it was intended to be a movie...then the director died and it was scraped and turned into TV series?

The books are fascinating, but very slow in pace compared to
what Americans are used to in "crime" entertainment. They are more human interest stories, rather than "mysteries". And violence is rare in them.

I think McCall-Smith's writing is most of the pleasure of the books. Once you read several, the stories become less engaging.
The 3rd book with the Giraffe on the cover was my favorite.
We bought several of them used in paperback, to have at home, from Amazon.

I didn't know it was made into a movie. I read most of the books and they were great! Hope all of your readers get a chance to read even one of them. Worth the time and they make you feel good. ginnie

I loved the TV series when it was on here, so I was disappointed when I read they weren't making another series! I think they are making a movie or 2 instead...are they? I hope so! :o
I have never read the books, didn't even know of the writer until the TV series was going to be shown! lol

Hi Mrs. D

You are right about the books being a little slower paced. I enjoyed that for once. The characters could be enjoyed and saviored a bit instead of rushing right on. I hope I catch the series on TV. But usually the books are better than what they show on TV or in the movies. Keep on reading, I sure do. ginnie
