MG Crisis and emotions

Hello all,

After doing so well for the past few months (using prednisone and azathioprine) my wife suddenly started experiencing slurring of speech and weak eyelids again last night :(

We think it could have been triggered by an emotional upset or some canned pink salmon we had for dinner last night...I read somewhere the sometimes if there is mercury present in fish like Salmon, then the mercury may aggravate MG.

Is there anyone here who has had a crisis triggered by an emotional upset? What was the experience like? Did you return to your previous state after the crisis was over and how long did the crisis last? My wife's speech has been slurred now for the past 12 hours and she has even taken extra Mestinon and prednisone compared to her normal dose but that has not helped. Does the MG get worse with each crisis or not necessarily.

Please help as any information is useful - its the not knowing that causes so much extra anxiety!!

Thank you all and thank you for this wonderful forum where one can share experiences and get advice,

Ricardo

I am not sure why you use the word crisis

Having slurred speech and eye problems is not a crisis.

Crisis is a potentially life threatening situation.

MG is an illness which tends to fluctuate (which means that there are good periods and less good periods).

In some people treatment leads to complete remission and disappearance of all their symptoms. But, in many others it leads to more good periods, but doesn't make the illness totally disappear.

For some people emotional stress is a trigger (which makes the illness worse) and for others it is not. Some people find that eating certain foods make them better or worse. Many times there is no known trigger.

If there is a sudden and on-going change in her condition, it would be advisable to notify her neurologist. Sometimes there is a need to change treatment. Sometimes the best is to just wait and let it get better on its own.

"For some people emotional stress is a trigger (which makes the illness worse)".

Theres no doubt that this quote applies to me.

As alice said, this doesn't seem like a crisis. a crisis is where you cannot breathe, swallow, or move well. (mostly requiring breathing help or no food via mouth-npo).

I have never had a crisis due to an emoyional outbreak, but a crisis is a crisis there is no in between. it's scary, and life threatening.

Your wife should not be increasing her prednisone without telling/asking her doctor, that in its self Is dangerous as well...

as for your question about numerous crisis'...no a crisis again, is a crisis. It does not get worse numerically. More/different muscles can be affected yet not from having one numerous times.

If your wife's breathing gets to the point where it is labored, go in. If she is resting and does not feel stronger, go in. if her swallowing muscles become fatigued, go in. That's ultimately the guideline I've recieved.
