Naps
First, this is my first post. I'm so glad to have found this board. I've learned so much already.
My dad was recently diagnosed, but is progressing quickly. His naps have increased to several times a day for short intervals. His lady friend keeps insisting that he shouldn't take these naps and keeps him up. My question is... are they doing him any harm? He just seems so worn down in the evenings when he doesn't nap. Thanks y'all. |
Part of it can be medication induced also.
My dad nods off at times when it's quiet and he's sitting down. They can't help it, it just happens. If they are up quite a few times during the night, it tends to happen even more often, because the sleep cycle is out of whack. I hope his lady friend will read up and learn about the many issues with PD so she can understand it better. Why add to his stress and get him flustered and embarrassed by things he can't control? |
naps - I take them too
I also nap fairly frequently. It's natural. Let Dad get his naps in. That's what his body needs at the time.

I also nap frequently..In the beginning I used to take a nap every afternoon because of fatigue, and now that I have been on Stalevo for a couple of years, I can take a nap at anytime during the day
|
I have needed a daily nap since I first had symptoms of PD more than 12 years ago. Now I frequently take more than one nap because it is hard to sleep for a long stretch at night. I hate the way I feel "out of it" in the evening if I don't get a nap.

Welcome, nolagirl. I'm not an "expert" on the subject, but I can't imagine that napping would ever be "harmful". That is, of course, so long as your dad isn't doing an activity such as driving a car when he decides to "nap".
Best wishes. |
I love to nap; it really helps get me through the day. I nap for 10 to 20 minutes when i am able to (cannot nap if stressed). Once or twice a day, I nap if i can. I have a friend who sleeps 4 hours at night and 2 hours at noon! But i prefer to nap briefly; full deep sleep in the daytime makes me groggy
The 9 to 5 thing is for modern business. Our ancestors slept when they were tired and ate when they were hungry. |

So, let your dad nap. He needs it, and it's the least harmful thing he could be doing, wouldn't you think? John |
