Blind from Optic Neuritis

My situation began approximately four months ago. I was shopping at a department store one day and had difficulty seeing the price labels on clothing. At first, I thought my eyes were tired until later that night I closed my left eye and noticed that the bottom half of my right eye was blind. I asked a few people if something was in the eye and they could not see anything.

By day two the eye was 95% blind and has been like this ever since.

Now I had lasik surgery in this eye twice in the past year (something went wrong with the first surgery, thus I had to have a second to fix it) so obviously I thought it was related to this.

I went to my optometrist who sent me to the vision clinic at a local hospital the following day. They immediately suspected this was symptomatic of Multiple Sclerosis, thus I had CT and MRI tests. The tests came back negative for MS, although they found a small fissure cyst on my right temporal lobe. They said it is nothing to worry about although through my own personal research, a lesion on the brain greatly increases the chances of developing MS in the future.

They did ultimately conclude that I had retrobulbar neuritis (optic neuritis)

Anyway, the doctors did not give me any treatment as they said after the first 24 hour period steroidal treatments are ineffective. They also stated that the longer the eye remains in this condition, the less likely the eyesight will return as scar tissue continually envelopes the optic nerve during long bouts of damage/inflammation.

I am currently four months with this affliction and my eye does not seem to be improving and am extremely worried regarding my prospects.

Do you have any advice for me? Do you know of any possible treatments whether medicinal or alternative?

Any help would be much appreciated

Scared,

I would make an appointment with an ophthalmologist as soon as possible. This type of doctor is a specialist in diseases of the eyes.

As far as having to start on steroids within 24 hours, that is the first time I have heard of that. When I had ON, there was a definite lag of a week or so before I could even get in to see an ophthalmologist, at which point I was put on steroids.

My eye cleared up in approximately 4 months and I have not had eye problems since then. That was in 1972.

As far as I know, a cyst in the brain is not the same thing as a MS lesion. There are medically knowledgeable people on this board that will correct me if I am wrong about this.

Odd

I have had MS since 2002, one of my major symptoms was that I lost my eye sight in my left eye, I had no vision what so ever. Along with that I had a few other problems as well as numbness and such but the most serious was my eye sight. This happen in Feb of 02 and went on till Aug of 02. At the time I had no clue that I even had MS, I put it off to working to much and laying in the tanning bed. When I finally got in and got dx with MS and ON I was put on steroid treatments right away for a week. Not only did it clear up my symptoms but I got my eye sight back. I have not lost my eye sight completely like before but I do know that when I start going into a flare up the way to tell is by my ON. MY eye's start getting blurry or double visioned and after getting the steroids it clears up. Hope this helps and that I didn't shoot over the point. Take care.

I have heard the eye problems frequently occur in the early stages of MS and resolve as time goes on, but total loss of sight is new to me. Good luck to you guys.
