Wisdom teeth removal complications

On dec 17 i got 4 of my wisdom teeth removed, i bled as expected and everything seemed fine until i woke up. When i woke up i had this hard lining on the side of my bottom right extraction site. It went along my gum. I thought it was normal and it would go away so 3 days went by and my bottom gums started bleeding again on and off. The hard lining got worse so i went back to my oral surgeon. He told me that the bleeding is normal. He pressed on the inflammed area but no abcess came out. He said that its not infected but it may become infected, so he prescribed flagyl to use alongside what he gave me earlier which was amoxicillin. Ive been taking the meds since then, the amoxicillin is almost finished and ill be done the flagyl by tuesday. The inflammation doesnt seem to be going down though. Also it been a week since i got my wisdom teeth removed and my bottom extraction sites still occasionally bleed... I cannot close my mouth due to my swollen gums. And i havent been able to eat anything except cold soup, jello, ice crem yorgurt ect. Im scares because of the bleeding i will get dry sockets, even though i have been extreamly careful. Anyways i was wondering if this is all normal... Ive lost my appitite aswell. I have school in a week and i dont want to be dealing with this. I forgot to mention that my bottom right extraction site is swollwen oer by the hard lining. the flagyl makes me feel so ill. Anywaya im really scared that im not developig a clot properly because i have on an off bleeding on both bottom extraction sites and also im not sure that thr medication he gave me is working because the swelling is the same. Any reassurace or comments would be appeciated!!

Hi Diana,

I'm puzzled as to what that hard lining is that you make reference too. Could it be the bony ridge of your jaw bone? What did the oral surgeon say it was?

I would consult with a different oral surgeon monday or tuesday. I think a second opinion on what is happening may be a good idea..... especially since you are returning to school soon.

Are you rinsing with warm salt water 3 times a day? Are you brushing your other teeth normally?

Please let us know how you're doing.

thanks for responding Bryanna, the hard lining is a inflammed part of my gum thats on the right side beside my cheek it's about 3 cm long and connects with my lower right extraction site. The doctor pressed on it to see if their was any abcess, but there wasnt. He decieded to put me on another antibiotic as a preventative measure, he told me the swelling would go down but im not sure if it is... I was rinsing my mouth with salt water before but i stopped because in my post-op booklet it never said to do it, so i was conflicted... I'm brushing my teeth but not as normal, I try to get most parts clean but i have difficulty opening my mouth and im afraid of irritating my extraction sites, because the last time i tried to brush my teeth more thoroughly i bled. Since im taking amoxicillin and Flagyl is the inflammed area supposed to go down by the time im finished the pills? the on and off bleeding really concerns me... I cannot wait for my appointment which is on wednesday. Am i worrying too much? And is it normal to have like slight bleeding after a week?

Hi Diana,

Slight occasional bleeding from extraction sites for the first week or two can be normal for some people. Any time the bleeding is actually oozing after the first couple of days is not normal. Prolonged bleeding generally occurs in people who are on blood thinning medications or who supplement with blood thinning nutrients like fish oil, garlic, vitamin E... or some herbs like st john's wort, kava kava, etc. Are you eating on the extraction site? If so, stop. Do you smoke? If so, that would also cause the wounds to bleed so it is best to refrain from it until the wounds close. Drinking alcohol? This will cause a disruption with the healing and could cause some bleeding. What are you doing to or using on the surgical site, anything? Are you rinsing with anything at all? Mouthwash of any kind should not be used as it will interfere with the healing .

The inflamed lining thing still baffles me. If it is hard, then it could be the bony ridge. If it is soft, then it is tissue that is swollen and I'm not sure why it would be swollen unless the dentist made an incision there and put sutures in. If so, then yes, that can be swollen for a few days or so especially if the sutures have plaque on them.

It is important to keep your mouth very clean. You should be brushing all of your teeth as thoroughly as you can and flossing daily as well. Just go gently in the teeth near that area.

Salt water rinsing beginning 24 hours post op is the general rule of thumb after any extraction. It helps clean the wound, lowers the risk of infection and is healing.

Pleas keep in touch... let us know how things are going.
