So confused

My father in law was rushed in the hospital with a bleeding ulcer,he has had
A MINOR stroke, non debilitating, he went. From fully fictional to non talking moaning and highly agitated. He did fall out of bed and hit his head but was talking afterward. Seems to have deteriorated . Will respond by groaning, if I call him he will look at me and moan. They seem to think that's it's has nothing to do with the fall, stroke or metabolically.. They are going to try to repeat the. Scans but he is uncooperative... I just don't know!

I'm sorry this serious thing is happening to you and your father.

In the elderly there can be confusing reactions to various common drugs. Zantac and Pepcid, Tagamet, cause a delerium of sorts in the elderly that some physicians are not aware of.

Also other drugs may do this in combination. So look at all the medications they are giving him.
This is a partial list of common drugs that can cause delirium in the elderly:
Anticholinergics (Benadryl, tricyclic antidepressants)
Narcotics (meperidine)
Sedative hypnotics (benzodiazepines)
Histamine-2 (H2) blockers (cimetidine)
Corticosteroids
Centrally acting antihypertensives (methyldopa, reserpine)
Anti-Parkinson drugs (levodopa)

Because of the ulcer, I suspect he is getting H2 blockers, which is pretty common. But morphine, and other opiates also can cause this, as well.

I'm so very sorry to hear about your Dad. I'm sorry to say that I don't have a:Heart:ny answers to offer you but I just wanted to offer you some form of prayer or support and let you know that you're not alone. My father also has deteriorated very quickly over the past year or so. He's increasingly confused and suffers with heart problems, obesity, inability to walk, neuropathy, diabeties, and a host of other problems as well. As I am also severely disabled now and live over an hour away and am unable to travel, I can't even see him at all right now and haven't for over four months. I miss him. I wish you and all of you family the best of luck. hugs...

Hi,

So sorry your father-in-law is having these health issues.

It's not easy to watch loved one's suffer.

There's lots of info here, so take your time and look around.

Hope things turn around quickly.
