Have a message on a toshiba, that pretty much says I need to open the hard drive!

Connect cable. There is more but that is the most I can ever remember.

It wont let us use the computer. Anyone know if I take it to be repaired.
If it will cost a lot.

g'day Donna.

You don't happen to remember seeing an error number do you?

Hard to know without having read the message.

Has anyone made any changes to the inside of the computer - like add anything or done some major update lately?

Having that error number would be really helpful.

edited to add: You say you can't use the computer.

Do you mean that it starts up but you can't connect to the internet or do you mean it won't start up?
What happens exactly when you boot the computer?

Dmom3005 12-31-2011 08:46 PM

It wont start up. And i'll work on getting a Error number.

Ugh, I can't get the message back up. But at least I did get a couple
other things accomplished.

But when I tried doing the system repair, it will only load the microsoft,
and then it goes to about 1/2 the line and it then goes to a cursor.

So that is my new thing I'm trying to figure out.

Ugh. But life it seems.

can you give more details?
laptop or desktop?
how old is it?
windows? XP, vista, win 7?
or mac?

You might check all cables & cords plugged into the computer, maybe someting is loose or has a bad wire??

could it be saying the hard drive is nearly full?

We really need more info to give better help suggestions..
but if it isn't starting up fully - it could be a hardware failure , a virus or some sort of operating system failure.

Those are pretty hard to diagnose witout being there in person.
Do you have a friend or neighbor that is handy w/computers?

If you have an installation cd you might be able to do a re install but that would wipe out all files and information that you now have.

Perhaps the message said... cannot access harddrive?

That is what our laptop did when the harddrive crashed.

Dmom3005 01-01-2012 08:26 PM

Its a laptop, pretty much less than a year. Bought last march or april.

The message, came to with something about:

mor: cable unconnected, when I looked it up on the computer it said something. About the harddrive maybe having a cable needing connected.

I am not sure if I should take the harddrive apart to look for a cable or not.

Thanks:grouphug:

If it is less than a year old it should be under warranty??

I suppose you can open up the little hard drive cover ans see if something is broken or disconnected.

BUT!!! But if still under warranty - opening it at all may void any warranty coverage.

I suggest calling the store where you bought it, or if online store contact that way, to find out details of the warranty and time limits of it.
Or find the receipt and check for info there , or possibly the website of the store might have warranty info.

Dmom3005 01-01-2012 09:54 PM

Thanks Jo*Mar

It came from a Walmart. And I've been looking for the receipt.

It was in a black box that I keep things in that has mysteriously
disappeared. The big thing is I think we might even have bought
extra coverage.

But without the receipt I don't think the store will take care of
it.

Since I can't figure out how to prove when I bought it.:grouphug:

Couldn't get back to check how you were doing.
Thanks everyone for trying to help.

It's a tricky message if it said the cable needed connecting. I was thinking yesterday that if the cable was disconnected, your computer wouldn't be working to even get a message.

Anyway, I hope you can find that warranty, Donna.
Some stores here will exchange or fix under warranty if you don't have a receipt, esp. if you paid for it with a credit/debit card as they have that transaction in their system. Just a thought.
