Amitriptyline dosage

My neuro had initially put me on 25mg per day to help with the daily headaches and eye pain I was experiencing. Initially this helped, but I have noticed the pain creeping up on me on a daily basis lately. She just increased the dosage to 50mg daily to see if that would help. Has anyone else been using this med for headaches or had a similar experience? I was so excited at first to be pain free and now I feel as if I am having a return of symptoms and got a bit depressed.

Yep, I had almost exactly the same thing happen. But 50 mg was too much for me -- I started having dizziness, etc. I'm back down to 30 mg now but still having more headaches than before. :(

The usually dose for just headaches and insomnia is only 10 mgs.

Seems odd the neuros are prescribing so much.

Pamelarae, did you increase your activity and stress load after feeling better from the 25mgs? The head aches may be brought on by an increase in activity and stress load. The concussed brain needs rest and low stress until it gets the intracranial pressure mechanism working correctly.

Hi Mark, Thanks for the info. My stress is always high as I am a single Mom! So, perhaps I need to try to take it a bit more easy and rest more. I am still working and picking up kids, helping with homework, making dinner, etc. (you get the picture!) I have tried the 50 mg and not sure, but I think it is making the dizziness worse. I just don't know anymore! I will try not to dwell on my symptoms so much.

pamelarae,

Are there any things you can do to lessen your load?

Can the kids walk home from school?
I did in New Hampshire and Connecticut, even in winter. Or enlist others for a car pool ride to and from school.

There are free online tutoring programs they may have access to for homework help.

After-school activities can be put off until you are better.

Can they help with household chores? Our kids were doing their own laundry starting when the youngest was 8 years old. They quickly learned the value of taking care of their clothes. Modern washers and dryers are easy to operate. You could make placards for them to follow. You will be surprised at how well they can do.

Do they have friends where they can spend weekend days to give you some peace?

They can become part of your solution. They are children. They have minimal say in the matter. Put the task before them and watch them rise to the occasion.

When they realize that their participation in household needs will help you heal so life can return to normal, they may become great helpers.

The other option is a mother who becomes grouchy and irritable as time goes on.

I hope you can find a way to lessen your load.

My best to you.
