Bizi, This is a good link. Mari |
i can't get a lot of them or they are expensive or both. eg, quinoa. horribly expensive as are many other "healthy" grains, compared to, say, rice, or even pasta. :( and not a lot of bulk type sale here... also a lot of safety issues... different scene.
"inexpensive" is a relative (pun applicable) term, too. meat/poultry/fish are objectively more expensive than the foods listed, but my family buys way more of these and then penny pinch on everything else. they have different priorities and preferences than i do. :o at least my mom buys quinoa or other grains when they are on sale... :o. spelt isn't too expensive here also. i finally tried kale but i'm really not crazy about it. i miss having salads using romaine lettuce as a base, with dandelion and spinach leaves mixed in. ~ waves ~ stepping out of my nostalgia here... "uh-oh" didn't mean to go there in the first place :o  |
good foods
Dear Bizi,
I liked the foods mentioned in the link: 1. I have cooked kale in the oven a little like we sometimes do roasted winter vegetables. It came out ok. My mother used to grow it in her garden. I think I only like the taste of it when it is a very small part of mixed greens -- like in a juicer. 3. Hubby likes winter squash in the crook pot with cinnamon. I should buy him some the next time I am out. 4. I like plain baked sweet potatoes. I have to keep my "supply" away from hubby so that he won't put them in the crock put and mess up their texture or throw them in a soup or something awful. 5. Cabbage is soooooooooo cheap and versatile. Hubby does not cook with it much so I have to teach him a little more. I like the purple cabbage because sometimes I remind myself to "eat my colors." 6. Apples are great this time of year. 7. I have almond milk in the fridge. I need to drink it before it expires. . .. all this talk of healthy food and all I want to know is if I can get some chocolate. M |
The health food store that i eat my lunch serves most of these foods. They prepare the kale by steaming it and adding small amounts of chicken broth and onion..and maybe a little olive oil. IT is delicious. I too like plain baked sweet potato. Love butternut squash soup. HOw would you fix the purple cabbage mari?

Mollie Katzen
you guys might enjoy Mollie Katzen's site and vegetarian cookbooks:
www.molliekatzen.com i have The Moosewood Cookbook in its original edition. I made up a few recipes from it - scrumptious, and her directions are clear and easy to follow. That is out of print i guess, but you can get the latest edition of The New Moosewood Cookbook. i saw The Enchanted Broccoli Forest on the shelves then... many times tempted to buy it and now wish i had. now only the revised edition is available. http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...9L._SL210_.jpg http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...vL._SL210_.jpg i believe in both cases the revised editions add guidelines for substituting traditional ingredients in case of special needs, or simply to "lighten" the recipes, and possibly photos. She has many other too books now, including one dedicated to soups, and one on salads... http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...EL._SL125_.jpg http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...8L._SL125_.jpg http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...TL._SL125_.jpg http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/...wL._SL125_.jpg |
